Dear Forum,

We are in the Market for a home in the West Plano Area and have very young children (3 under 5). We have been trying to find homes in the area but there are none available in our price range that don't have a pool. We have thought about purchasing a home and getting the pool removed. I would like to hear from those that have had a pool removed and the associated cost.

Thank You

Why get it removed? Is it a cost issue or safety? If safety, they make some outstanding covers and gates now to protect the little ones from getting in and it would be a great thing to have for when they are older.

I think you'll regret that come time to sell. We just put a fence up.
We will not buy a house without a pool, my kids love the pool and we use it daily in the summer.

And obviously you don't have to answer my questions, I was just trying to make some other suggestions for you.

I think most people just have the pool filled in if they dont want it. I would think filling it in would be much more cost effective than removing it. Ive never heard of having a pool removed.

There are SO many ways you can keep little ones safer with a pool on the property. Door alarms, pool alarms, safety swim instruction, perimeter fences, covers- totally understand if your mind is made up but even if you did all of those things I still don't think it would cost as much as filling in a pool. And your children will be old enough to enjoy that pool sooner than you think!

This is Texas, pool is a BLESSING. There are fences, alarms, sensors, covers etc to keep it safe. That being said, you can get it removed, filled or covered if you want.

A friend of mine in extreme North Dallas got a quote last month. Removing the pool would have cost $13K. Completely rehabbing and kiddy-proofing the pool $9K. He fixed the pool.

Filling in a pool is really shortsighted. Either you'll have to disclose such at sale time or you'll take on a never ending liability issue more or less forever.

Keep the pool - it's critical to teach your children respect for and safe conduct in water.
