Developer Trammell Crow Co. is getting close to kicking off development of a key property adjacent to Dallas’ Cityplace community.

Last summer the Dallas-based commercial real estate bought 17 acres of the Affiliated Computer Services on North Central Expressway at Haskell Avenue.

Since Crow’s purchase there has been lots of speculation about what kind of project the firm is planning on the prime, close-in building site.

If allowed, this project will throw back any progress gained in Dallas' core decades.

A suburban-style shopping center on a prime site next to Cityplace!?! What a horrible plan.

Why force everyone in the city to drive out to the suburbs? It's a great idea.

I dunno, maybe because if you decide to live in the urban core...you may not be as interested in shopping at a warehouse club as people with 3k sq ft houses in the 'burbs with families to feed? It's kind of one of the sacrifices you make for living where you live. Nobody's being "forced" to drive to the suburbs to buy silly quantities of pretzels or enough toilet paper to last until the apocalypse. Most apartment dwellers don't want to fill their limited square footage with that crap anyway. When I was renting a 1,000 sq ft condo I didn't shop at warehouse clubs.

There's a Sam's Club less than 6 miles away at Northwest Hwy and Skillman.

Dallas Sam's Club #6372

I'm not opposed to a Sam's Club at the Cityplace site, just the type of development pictured. Why not build density by adding multi-family residential and/or office space on top of the retail portion? A gigantic Sam's Club surrounded by acres of parking lot is gross.

I live in a 900 sq ft apartment and I shop at Sam's Club all the time. Besides, the gas is cheaper.

Have you been there? It's disgusting! I have to go up to the one on Spring Creek to shop at a decent one.

There's already a new Sam's Club that was built just a few years ago just a few miles away in Lake Highlands. Is there really a market for two Sam's Clubs so close to each other?

What would keep the possible Cityplace Sam's Club from becoming "disgusting"?

Your response alone is a reason why a free-standing Sam's Club should be discouraged from being built on the site. Most older Sam's Clubs become disgusting, then Walmart Inc. abandons them for brighter pastures, while leaving a giant eyesore behind to somehow be repurposed or torn down completely.
