Hi all, I need some help. We are possibly going to be relocating to the Dallas area from Cincinnati, Oh. We have lived here our entire lives and all of our family is here. I stay at home with our 3 small children, 9, 4 1/2 & 19 mons. My husband has been offered a job there but not sure if he should take it. We know nothing about Texas, only that it's the Lone Star state. Can anyone help me with the best schools and good neighborhoods? Thanks!

What part of town will he be working in? That will have a big influence on where we suggest you move...

What part of town will your husband be commuting to? and what type of budget are you working with? The metroplex here is 3500 square mile and knowing those 2 would narrow it down a lot.

He will be working from home and commuting to different locations. He works in aviation but we want to stay away from the airport. He currently drives 30 miles each way to work now. We were thinking about the Plano area or somewhere on the north/northeast side of the city. What are the good schools and neighborhoods in that area? We currently are in one of the top ranked schools in the county and would like to continue that. Thanks for any help!

Well, I grew up in Cincy as well, east-side, and left about 3 years after I graduated from UC. I am the only one in my family to have moved away thus far. My wife and I have lived in several states, MI, TN & now TX. We like Texas the best and have been here since 2001. We wife accepted an opportunity in Dallas last year so we've been here for a little over a year now.

A couple things to keep in mind:
1. It can be very HOT in Texas... yes, it can be hot & humid in Ohio but not as oppressive as Texas heat.
2. You have NOT seen traffic until you move to Houston, Dallas, Ft, Worth, Austin or San Antonio! I drove a company car across most of south, central and eastern Texas since '01 so I understand how bad Texas traffic can be first-hand... not near as bad as L.A. though.
2. The winters here are very pleasant... unless you are a "winter lover" you'll wonder why you lived in the midwest so long once you're here. Dallas gets a bit more winter than south Texas but less than north Texas. Also, the humidity here isn't as bad as it is in central & south Texas.
3. Dallas has lots of good school districts and some not so good districts too. You just need to search through some of the previous posts on this site. Plano is a nice area but it is like any area... has its share of problems depending on your perspective. It is separated by 75 (Central Expressway) which is arguably the most congested expressway in the DFW area.

The food here is good and generally affordable with BBQ (yes, BBQ is a product in Texas and not a process like it is in most of the country) being a specialty along with Mexican. We do miss Skyline, Busken Bakery, Montgomery Inn, UDF, LaRosa's pizza and Frisch's Big Boy.

A few favorites that we've discovered in Texas so far: Braum's ice cream, Sonny Bryan's BBQ, Connie's custard (NW Houston area) which is the best around and we've tried many others including Wild About Harry's in Dallas, Original Pancake House, Burger House, Primo Brothers pizza. We had several very good Mexican choices in NW Houston (Del Pueblo, Lupe Tortilla, Pappasito's Cantina) but have not found a "Mexican superstar" in Dallas yet--tried several but nothing outstanding yet? Oh yeah, Kroger is here too in case you didn't know.

We are moving to the Coppell/Lewisville area later this summer after living in the eastern part of Dallas for a little over a year. We enjoy living in the northeast Dallas (White Rock Lake, etc.) area a great deal but don't like the ever increasing crime, poorly maintained & dilapidated roads. Dallas County does have some very nice communities like Lakewood, University Park, Highland Park, Lake Highlands to name a few. University park seems to have the best roads in Dallas County from my travels and Lakewood probably has the most culture.

We will still be in Dallas County but closer to shopping, restaurants and entertainment. We will still continue to shop at our favorite mall in Dallas, Northpark, from time to time as well.

This should give you a few things to start thinking about...

Runnn, thanks for your input. The bad thing for us is that we have a house to sell first and god only knows how long that will take. My husband wants to move more than I do. I would rather stay here since all of our family is here. The thought of moving to some place that we have know idea about scares me. We shall see!

Hey, i feel your "pain". My hubby wants to move and has been talking me into it for a year now, so I am flying to visit next weekend and staying for 4 days! We will be leaving family behind, in CLE. Considering how nice and helpful all the people on this forum are, it must be a GREAT place

It is indeed a great place. My husband and I & 2 kids left Chicago 13 years ago for Dallas, we didn't know anyone here socially. This is our home now and we love it!!!

Come on down ya'll !!

Would have to agree with you. People on here seem very nice and helpful. My husband and I are thinking about flying down for a few days also, just to get a feel what what it's like. Good luck with your decision.

I think you'll be more than surprised when you get to Dallas...it won't be anything like you expect (in a good way)
