Hello,

We recently leased a house in Plano and really like the area. We are in Pitman Creek, an older area near Collin Creek Mall. The area is surprisingly quiet, and the access to GBush and 75 is really nice. We would like to stay for a year or two because the housing market is so crazy right now. We sold our house for a nice profit and would like to wait for things to settle down before purchasing again.

Our problem is that we have a 4yr old and the elementary that we are zoned for is not great (Sigler.) We were thinking we would move in a year to a more desirable area, but I was reading in the forum that Plano allows you to transfer. What does the process entail and when would I need to begin? Our daughter is currently enrolled in a preschool that offers Kindergarten. We plan to keep her there, so we technically have 2 years to decide what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The thought of moving again in such a short time makes me tired.

Thanks!

I'm surprised that Sigler is a concern. I've never heard a negative word about that particular campus.

But, if that school isn't going to work for you, I'd suggest looking into Harrington Elementary. Very small (400 students in K-5), excellent staff, and not too far from where you're at. (FWIW, Harrington also houses the district-wide Chinese pre-K and K programs, and some of those kids choose to remain at Harrington beyond K.)

It's a Title one school and for most all the elementary schools in Plano with Title one , it means that the kids are mainly taught the test and nothing else. It is not the case for other elementaries within the district but unfortunately it has been going on for about 6 or 7 years now.
Until last year , your better chance was to camp at PISD in April for Kindergarten and January for other grades to assure a place for transfer , now it is only done via online list , leaving few chances of getting the parents their choice of campus.

Thank you all for the help. I appreciate the insight in to PISD (that's what I was looking for.) Having been at a private pre-k for two years, this is an entirely new area for us. I didn't know if camping out was still an option, if it was necessary, if a transfer is really possible, etc. Sigler isn't a terrible school, but if we decide we'd like to purchase a house in another area (likely), I was hoping to avoid changing schools. My thought was that we'd pick our top 3 based on where we'd like to live long term, looking at middle school-high school feeders, etc. Our 4 yr old daughter is very verbal, and has been from an early age. She's analytical, but also very creative. She'll be fine wherever she goes. We are laid back in the sense that I don't think that you can pick THE perfect school, it's more about the teachers, the parent involvement, and the community. We like homes in Plano Senior and Plano East. We aren't focused solely on Plano West. We want a diverse community with strong academics, one of the reasons that we chose PISD. We just need to figure out where to go from here.

Thanks again!

Camping out was still an option this year. One of my colleagues camped to get his kid transferred to Rice Middle from Robinson. He mentioned camping out the night before (around 11:30 PM) and he was #6 in the line and was successful in securing the transfer. His kid will be going to middle school starting this year. I am not sure if that option is available for next year, you will need to call in and check.

Interesting comment about only teaching to the test at Title 1 schools. I got the impression ALL schools did that to some degree.

I've worked with and have friends who are involved with Memorial ES, which is Title 1. They don't have an active PTA and they don't have outrageous auctions and field days like some of the affluent schools. But their big night of the year is Math Night. Huge with the kids and parents. Personally, I thought it was way more impressive than a luau.

Thinking ahead to the transfer process, I would like get some feedback on the schools listed below. We are looking for elementary schools that are academically challenging, but that also have a strong arts program. I plan to tour each elementary to determine what is the best fit for our family, but would appreciate feedback from parents in the area (understanding that Jasper is the first choice.) I work downtown, so we are focused primarily on central/west plano. We don't want to be too far north or east (Murphy.)

We have quite a few years before our daughter reaches high school (and a lot will change in that time), but I am curious what the thoughts are regarding Clark vs Vines. I've read quite a bit of conflicting information on the forum. Clark seems to be the current front runner when compared to Jasper.

Thanks!

Daffron - Robinson/Jasper/PlanoWest
Carlisle - Schimelpfenig/Clark/PlanoSr
Saigling/Davis - Haggard/Vines/PlanoSr
