Some companies do credit checks, others don't. That is helpful info (i hope) for OP. All the rest of this fighting over whether a hypothetical employee's hypothetical financial problems are potentially harmful to a hypothetical employer is silly.

Agreed. Though I think given the responses in this thread alone, the number of companies that will do a credit check far exceed those that don't.

After all, we're talking about a day and age where people can get fired over what they post on their Facebook account. Pretty sure any company that is looking at that info is also doing credit checks.

Doesn't matter OP. Apply to as many positions as you can and see what happens. Nothing you can possibly do about having bad credit other than work on repairing it.

Don't let the fear of getting rejected cause you to not make a move.

If you have the right skillset you will be sought after for employment.

Do the best to repair your credit, but don't let it keep you from pursuing a new job.

The company I work for, a multibillion dollar corporation in the healthcare field, absolutely does credit checks on every single employee hired from low level employees to the highest. The reasoning is like everyone else said, to judge responsibleness etc. Granted, I think a poor credit score does not necessarily equate to an irresponsible employee, but that doesn't change the fact that employers look at that as a determining factor.
