Hi everyone,

I'll be visiting Dallas next week for the first time, trying to decide whether this is a place where I'd want to possibly move to in the future. I'll be there from Wed thru Sun.

If I move here, my work will most likely be in Allen. Is there anything you recommend me to do/see for those days I'm out there? I hear Frisco is relatively close to Allen so I'll be visiting there and checking out some houses, but I was just wondering if you had any other suggestions.

I'm single, in my mid 30's, and I've lived in Southern Cali most of my life, so ideally it'd be great if I could live somewhere somewhat happening and not way too family oriented.

Thanks,

Al

The happening place is in Uptown just north of downtown Dallas. Allen and Frisco are very family oriented places not overrun with singles.

My wife and I moved here over the summer from L.A. (city of). Dallas is by and large a family oriented city. There is plenty to do here for singles but the mentality is very different than Southern California. More people at a younger age are married here, especially by the time they are mid-30's. Not saying you won't like it, but the cultural norm here is to be married when you are in your 30's. It's a different vibe, especially in the suburbs like another poster pointed out. If you are living a comfortable life as a 30-something single in SoCal you will most likely be bored out of your mind in the north Dallas suburbs.

I would love to have a single hip neighbor in Mckinney (smile) BUT you would be bored to death up here in the burbs. Even if you work in Allen look at homes/condos maybe closer to the downtown area. You would be traveling against traffic so commuting would not be a big deal. If you have a agent--they will try to show you Mckinney and I am just not sure it would be the happening place for a single guy. Good luck with your upcoming adventure!

Default Yikes....Single, non-family oriented...forget the suburbs

and focus only on Dallas. Downtown, uptown, Oak Lawn, Oak Cliff, Inwood Village, East Dallas, Lakewood, M Streets,,,maybe Addison.

Yeah, that's about right. Oak Lawn especially, S4, TMC, Havanas, love 'em.

I cringe every time this happens. Somebody is moving to "Dallas," but they just jump from suburb to suburb. Then they complain there is nothing to do.

Allen, Frisco, McKinney and the rest of Collin County are family-oriented communities devoted to the car, chain restaurants, and Wal-Mart. If that's your idea of a singles scene -- have at it.

If you want to have a good lifestyle for a single guy -- don't look in the suburbs. Go to Uptown, Downtown, and Knox-Henderson. Look for a better job in the city. You'll be a lot happier.

Live in the Uptown area (where all the young singles and the places they frequent are) and commute up to Allen on Central Expressway. You'll be going against the traffic and, perhaps, be living where you'll meet people like yourself. There's nothing wrong with Allen or Frisco but it's pure suburbia, which is fine if that's what you're looking for - and you might be. Some people prefer that environment as opposed to a more dense, urban one.

If you want to live somewhere not too family oriented, stay away from Frisco. It'd help to know what your budget is in terms of areas that are more your speed.

TMC is closing January 13. Sue Ellens is moving into its spot.
