Tell me about Lufkin
Hubby is looking at a possible transfer to Lufkin. Tell me the pros and cons, please? And if anyone works in the post office, please respond to this. I have many questions, thank you!

Lufkin is kind of laid back from what I remember. I lived in Nacodoches for a year and we went to Lufkin to go to the movies and dinner at times. Small town envioronment in comparison to cities like Houston, Dallas, and Ft.Worth.

Lufkin, small town in the big piney woods. One of the main industries is lumber. Home of Angelina College (local). About 2 hrs north of Houston. Short drive to Lake Sam Rayburn...maybe the locals can tell you more, I've just been driving or riding through it at least 4 times per year over the last 40 years. BTW it has grown over that time and will be on the new I-69 route whenever they get around to building it.

Hey there, my family is from there. I was actually married there at The First Christian Church over on 1st Street in 1990. Lufkin is by no means a small town nor a small city.. but a large town. Large enough to support a small mall, with Chili's, Red Lobster and few other name restaurants... They have Old Navy and JC Penney's too.. I have not made trip to Lufkin in a 2 years due to my sister moved away.... but I hear all the time the happenings around from my relatives and friends.
The town has hit a low economically with so many industries leaving... Lufkin Industires left, Arthur Temple moved his offices to Austin and a host of other business's have left... the plant that makes the funny paper inserts for the newspapers around the country are still there along with chick a stick and the chicken plant.
Culture wise, Lufkin is tied to the old south and to me is apart of it and moreso than where I live now... church is important to many there, southern speech is more thick there... poverty is there amongst many and as my daddy put it, there is a little bit of appalachia there. If there is anything you would like to ask me, just pm me and I will answer to the best of my knowledge.

Your right, it not so small anymore but I'm from Houston. In comparison it is kind of small. I stand corrected. Towns like Diboll are small. Gonna be interesting to see what happens with all the industry suffering around there though.

My cousins live in Lufkin and love it. They're active in social circles and in their kids' schools (private). We've met several of their friends and they're all as nice as they can be. It's only 2 hours or so from Houston and that's where they go for all their important shopping since the selection is much better. You might try asking your question in the general Texas forum or, possibly, Houston. Dallas is pretty remote from Lufkin.

I was raised in Lufkin (FullerSpring Area) and moved away to Houston for 15 yrs and now I am back. Lufkin is a large town with lots of pretty sceneries. Not fast paced at all. If you enjoy peaceful quite days and than you will enjoy Lufkin. The only and the biggest problem and why the economy does not improve in Lufkin is because the cost of living is more expensive and the pay scale is lower (comparing to houston). As one of my friends and I discussed before you have to move away from Lufkin and make your money and than you can come back to enjoy it. Is sad that we can't keep our money in our own community. To help improve our town. But overall BEAUTIFUL and PEACEFUL!!!
