Wouldn't Lakewood or fancy areas of Oak Cliff be a better place to live if you are going to downtown Baylor, especially with a $500k budget?

Lots of Baylor health care providers choose east Dallas, specifically Lakewood, but 500,000 doesn't go very far in that area right now

This, and with a 5th grader they would be looking at Long or privates, not Stonewall or Lakewood, b/c IIRC DISD does K-5 in Elementary with 6th lumped in with middle schoolers (7th and 8th).

Not when middle school is looming. The closest in neighborhood with good middle schools is Lake Highlands, which IMO, the poster should take a hard look at. Lots of dr's live there, good schools, easy commute.

J. L. Long in Lakewood/East Dallas is one of only three public International Baccalaureate middle schools in the entire North Texas area. Its science and math teams regularly beat prestigious private schools such as St. Mark's, Hockaday and ESD.

Five to ten minutes to Baylor...you should investigate: J L Long Middle School - J L Long Middle School

The high school, Woodrow Wilson, is also an accredited IB World School and offers a full range of Advanced Placement courses. It's somewhat different from most schools in that it has four college prep academies: STEM (Woodrow has the largest engineering enrollment in Texas in a comprehensive high school and is the closest certified PTLW school to Baylor/Downtown - the others that are certified are north of LBJ), Business/Entrepreneurship/Finance, Creative and Performing Arts (largest dance enrollment in Dallas) and IB/IBCC. I second East Dallas and the public schools. Makes much more sense than a long commute from Coppell.

Yup...Lake Highlands would be a great place to start.

FND or Richardson could also be good options. Longer commute though.

Funny, I see dozens of current listings in Southlake for under $500k.

A different feel? You mean like a Whole Foods rather than Central Market difference? Come on, they're both wealthy suburbia. Both are mostly vanilla but very upscale. Very little distinguishes the two based on "feel."
