Talking Single Soon-to-be mom. Whats a good area?

I will be renting at first, and working from home as a medical transcriptionist. I have visible tattoos and am pregnant. I'm trying to find somewhere where I wouldn't be an outcast, and that has great school districts. I'll only need a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment at first, but I'd like to buy my first home in the next three to four years. Obviously, it would be nice to find a part of town where there are some singles, too. Is there anywhere you know of like this?

Are you familiar with DFW or are you from out of town?

I'm from out of town. I was born and raised in Hawaii, lived in sacramento, San Diego, Las Vegas.... I was raised a country girl believe it or not (yep, cowgirls in Hawaii!) LOL and I love the southern lifestyle, although I've never visited or even been to the south.

I'd like to stay under a thousand a month. I'd prefer a nicer, safer area =]

Thanks again!

Your price range opens up a lot of possibilities. Since you are still expecting, and will be renting I wouldn't worry too much about school districts.

Do you want city, suburban, or country?

Deep Ellum, Uptown, Mockingbird Station, and The Village all come to mind. The Village is probably the most affordable area, Uptown is probably the safest. All are centered on young progressive minded singles. Deep Ellum has been the center of the Dallas music scene for years, but its being redeveloped into something more mundane.

East Dallas - look for an apt or duplex around Oram, La Vista. Moderator cut: please DM this link to the OP

I am looking for something slightly suburban, but not far from the city, as long as its safe. I have a dog, a 50 pound australian shepherd, so towns that are dog friendly are great too!

finding an apartment complex that will take a large dog may be a bit of a challenge, but they are out there.

Plano and Dallas both have dog parks.

Plano is very suburban, and family friendly. I'm not sure if there is much of a singles scene, but there is plenty to do in Plano.

The company that owns my apartment complex allows dogs up to 70lbs. They have two complexes in the area, SevenOaks, and Clearwater Creek.

One Bedrooms start at $700, and two bedrooms start around $900 where I live. The rates are higher at Clearwater creek, but they are bigger units, and the area is very nice with lots of parks and green space.

Both have really good freeway access, but SevenOaks is closer to shopping and dining.

Oh and they do have a singles group at the complex, and they have little get togethers.

Moderator cut: referring to a post that has been removed

You did not ask for parenting advice or for someone to second guess the reason you're moving to a new city at this stage in your life. It's not necessary to know intimate details of your personal life to recommend a place to live. But it would be helpful to know a little more about what you're looking for. If you have never been to DFW and are able to travel, perhaps you could make a short trip to drive the area and see what sort of community interests you. You mention school districts, but as someone pointed out, if this is your only child it will be a while before you will have the need. So I wouldn't focus too heavily on that for now. You also mentioned suburbs, so it would be helpful to know what kind of neighborhood you're looking for. Something well established or something still growing? Do you want to be in a bedroom community or do you need to be somewhere close to lots of activities? Many apts do have size limits for dogs so that could be limit your choices. Maybe these sort of questions will help narrow down your search. I am more familiar with Plano/Allen/McKinney/Frisco areas. Of those, I'd say Plano has more choices in apts and activities. And it has access to good healthcare which you will need.

Please don't let your tats or your single mother status keep you from exploring all the DFW area has to offer.

Many posts have been removed from this thread due to the fact that they did not address the OP's initial and subsequent queries. Let's stay on topic and if you have something to say to another member or advice to give beyond the scope of the topic at hand feel free to utilize the DM (direct message) feature (within the TOS) offered here in the forums. I understand many are trying to be helpful but when the posts start wandering all over the map it is a disservice to the OP. Thanks folks.
