We just moved to TX and were wondering if some of you could walk us through the whole emissions, registration, drivers license and plates scenario. Specifically, what order do they have to be done in, and what are the costs involved? We live in Collin County. Thanks so much.

Texas was the most challenging state to do the whole switchover process of any state I've lived in. Pay close attention to the details.

Go to a state inspection. You will see them all over the place. It was something like $45 and included a car wash. Then you can take the paper to the Tax Office. McKinney is the county seat. There is also one in Frisco and another in Plano. You can look up the hours, I think the Frisco one is open late in Wednesday.

Cliffs Notes:
New residents have 30 days to switch license plates/registration to TX
New residents have 90 days to switch to TX DL, which includes your new TX address (30 days once you've lived here and move)

Are we required to display plates on the front and back of vehicles here?

Yes.
But most people with really nice cars don't.
I do on my truck, but I don't on my sports cars.
