Farmers Branch is largely industrial but has a few nice pockets, heading south from Addison. I would say Carrollton over Farmers Branch. AVOID Carrollton like the plague if you are single. It is STRICTLY a family town. If you are younger and single, then you want to look at Uptown/Downtown, Addison and anyplace closer to the Tollway.

also looking in Carrollton
Our family is moving from California to the Dallas area. My husband will be starting a job in Bedford and we're looking for a place to live. We've been looking in Carrollton because we heard that it's a family area, but during my research I've heard some people say that some areas are sketchy. We want to live in an apartment for a year or so while we shop around for a house, and I'm finding all the choices pretty overwhelming, as we've never been to Dallas and haven't the faintest idea where to start. We're looking for a place anywhere outside Dallas in the suburbs that's quiet and safe... preferably with plenty of trees. Basically, we're moving away from Los Angeles and we'd like to live somewhere that's totally different! Any info would be much appreciated.

Carrollton would be quite a drive from Bedford and the traffic can be horrendous. I honestly dont find Bedford a bad place to live, and the HEB school district that serves the area is good. If you want to be close to Bedford then look into the cities of Grapevine and Coppell. Both are nice, new, and family oriented.

I live in Farmers Branch. I think it is fine, lots of variety: old homes with no home owners association such as where I live. A significant percentage of the population does not speak English, but crime has not been a problem, so I don't care. There are also fancy exclusive neighborhoods. We homeschool and are looking for a job further north east so that we can move and get some land and goats. We just got a few chickens as pets and I hope the city doesn't give us trouble. Despite the name, the last farm closed down around 1990, I think.

the poster who is taking a job in Bedford, the drive from Carrolton is a very big stretch. The posher areas too that aren't far from there would be Grapevine, Southlake and Colleyville isn't far as well if I remember correctly.
I lived near Euless in an apartment 16 years ago. Euless and Hurst tend to be a bit older areas.

Herb Market
I worked in the Herb Market in Carrolton one summer. If you do move there, its a neat little store, and what most people don't know is you can get kitchen herbs (basil, oregano, bay leaves etc) a lot cheaper there than even at Walmart. But I didn't get to see much more of the town. I have heard that Coppel has really great schools. Interviewed there for a job once and remember I liked their outlook on education. Lewisville also has great schools, although its further away.

Best adive for moving to this area (we live in Carrollton) is be the most defensive driver you can be. No one can drive good here. I have come close to getting hit almost every time I get in my car.

My house is in Farmers Branch and my neighbors house (2 houses down) sits in Addison,( Addison is only 4.5 miles wide) so I am as far Northeast as it gets for FB....on the east side of Marsh. We live in this amazing, great, safe, clean, QUIET, manicured neighborhood ( Wooded Creek-62 houses) .Average police response time is less than 5 minutes! My house backs up to a creek with a Wooded preserve across the creek. On the other side of the creek is the Brookhaven running track. SO, with the back of the house being nearly all windows...living here FEELS like I live in the country....very GREEN I am literally 5 minutes from 635, N.Dallas Toll, Galleria, IH35. I just can't imagine a better location to be living in....so easy to get around the city WITHOUT feeling like I am living in the city.
The best thing to do is drive around and look. I was working with a professional when I decided to buy a home , but found this house myself...with the internet and a car! I was feeling fairly depressed at what I was seeing for less than $250,000.
I am retired-ish and leaving the Dallas area soon, but I spent a LOT of time checking out everything all over the metroplex just 3 years ago, and I wouldn't rule out Farmers Branch. I think it might surprise you what you will find that some people don't even know exists! I have LOVED Farmers Branch and prior to moving in this area never gave it a second thought.

I have found the HEB area to be a great location. I moved here from San Diego. I can get anywhere traffic wise without really being in "traffic" because I have stayed in this little "nucleus". Schools are great here and it's kind of close to everything. 10 min. to DFW airport....malls 10-20 minutes any direction you go.....30 min. to Fort Worth Zoo.... Bedford is really more a suburb of the Fort Worth side.
