Another New-to-Dallas question:

What's the best way to get rid of red ants in the backyard?
We have dogs, and they like to dig around and bury stuff back there, so we need it to be safe for them but also effective.
I'm concerned about the chemicals professional sprayers use. They say their stuff is safe once it dries, but…

You can try corn meal (the cooking stuff). Poke a hole in their usual entrance/exit then sprinkle some corn starch around that. They'll pick it up to take inside to eat. Or, you might try some diatomaceous earth at your local farm and ranch supply. Or Amazon. Can also be a natural way to treat fleas.

It would probably be easier to teach your dogs not to dig that it will be to get rid of the ants.

Your dogs won't bother the ants and the ants won't bother the dogs. They, and you, will quickly learn to step over the any hills.

Do you mean fire ants? You can get beneficial nematodes from the local feed and seed. They help control fire ants, fleas and grubworms (become June bugs). We've used them for years and it's good time to start putting them out. You'll find instructions to control fire ant mounds but we prefer to just spray the yard and that's always managed to fix the fire ant problem.

If they're red ants, please leave them! .. fire ants won't establish where the red ants live, and horned toads need red ants to survive.

If they're fire ants, diatomaceous earth is your best friend!
