We moved here 11 years ago from ATL. I lived there for 5 years where I met my husband, married him and then promptly got out of ATL. We moved down to East Dallas from Frisco about 3.5 years and absolutely love it. We are in IT and the IT industry is great in Texas. Especially if you are willing to work. ATL is pretty - as long as you don't have to drive and frankly - don't have to deal with many of the people. If you want trees like ATL - go look in East Dallas. It's beautiful. And for food - Dallas has caught up to ATL and has wonderful options. People are nicer in Texas I think. Less passive-aggressive attitude and honestly a lot less of the 'have vs have not' stuff. And traffic is a no-brainer. Traffic in Atlanta is hell. Bamain is right. When we lived there - my commute was 1.5 hrs one way. It was horrible. And for reference - my husband lived in ATL for 15 years (originally a NYer) and he would not go back. Hope that helps a little.

My suggestion is to visit before moving here.

Great place for families in my opinion. Not the best for singles.

Wow and I thought Atlanta was snobbier, but its mostly the transplants from the Northeast. Georgia natives are some of the friendliest people you'll meet.

Dallas and Atlanta are very similar cities.

IMO, Dallas has the edge in job market for tech jobs, milder winters, better roads for commuting,
shopping/dining.

Atlanta has the edge for outdoor activities like hiking/tennis, neighborhoods are nicer with less of a
cookie cutter vibe, better public transportation with MARTA.

The traffic situation in Atlanta is horrible though, and city planners did not do well with the
suburban sprawl.
Traffic is a B*tch in Atl, at least here in Phoenix we have a grid system. Atlanta keeps building but never does anything to help the congestion. City officials are idiots there.

It took me 1 hour to get home for a 18 minute commute one time in Atlanta. Overall my time in Atl was ok can't complain, but I do agree with you about the passive-aggressive people there. On top of that alot people I met like to exaggerate something about themselves to impress people which I found annoying.

Atlanta born and bred (well part of the time an hour south in the boonies). I would wonder why you didn't like Atlanta. What you say above that you don't like about Atlanta can be found here as well. What I can offer about Dallas is why it is similar to Atlanta in many, many ways. So if you don't like Atlanta, would think anything I have to add would be negative as I would make comparisons to how it is like Atlanta. Outside of the topography, Atlanta and Dallas are about as similar as any two American cities can be.

I didn't say I hated it, but I thought Dallas might be a option for career and other reasons. Chicago and NY are similiar on the outside, but they are still very different in alot of ways. I've been houston and austin, not Dallas thats why I asked.

20 years in Atlanta, just moved to the metroplex.

The most honest thing I can say to you about Dallas is that people don't move here for the scenery. They come for jobs, affordable housing and mild winters. The east side of the metroplex has some decent greenery and rolling countryside, but absolutely nothing around here compares to the beauty of north Georgia.

Traffic is bad here, too......I mean, any metro of 6 million is going to have bad traffic, but there are many more highways in DFW to handle it than there are in Atlanta. It's just a better freeway layout across the board. The George Bush turnpike serves as an outer perimeter to 635, which is something Atlanta hasn't been able to get done yet, and needs to badly. 285 is just the worst road to be stuck on.

No state income tax in Texas, but property taxes are higher than in Ga. Rents are higher here in DFW than I expected also. Atlanta has more of a winter, if you can call it that, being over 1,000 ft. in elevation at the base of the Appalachians.

Best thing about Atlanta is its proximity to the mountains, the Carolinas, and Florida. Just a few hours each way driving, less by plane.....can't beat it. Dallas is way more isolated. Both are football meccas, which I love.

DFW is technically part of tornado alley, but north Ga. is part of "Dixie Alley", which some years has more severe weather than we see here.

Thanks, sounds pretty accurate, People move to Dallas for jobs and lower COL which I have heard many times. One thing I miss about Atl is getaways to places like myrtle beach, savannah, FL and even Carolinas. Landscape in Georgia is nice also I just wish they would stop building more strip malls and condos in place of it.

Pretty accurate. My only disagreement would be the winters. Very similar, but have felt colder here and have seen much larger snowfalls here than what is typical for Atlanta. Summer temps are 10 degrees hotter but the humidity is less so that kind of evens out.

Came to the area in the 80s for grad school, married a Texan, back to GA for all the kids to be born, been back in Collin County for the last 11 years.
