Hello All,
Our builder is giving us the following Trees to pick from:
1. Live Oak
2. Lacebark Elm
3. Cedar Elm
4. Bald Cypress
We have to pick 3.

Given the DFW weather, what would be the best choices? What will be the Pros and Cons?

Look forward to your feedback.

Cedar elms are great trees: haRd wood, live to 75-100 yrs, resistant to pests/diseases.

Thank you SoBelleInUtah!
@whj3773, I know Oak does, but I believe after a certain time. That is an issue because it mini Oaks start growing in your yard

No acorns with Cedar Elms. We have 3 and they are great trees. You really can't go wrong with any of them, to some degree it's a personal choice. Live oak will drop acorns, so that could turn you off, but it's the only one that is evergreen and you may have a spot you want green all year round. They also have a wider spread than the other listed, so need more horizontal space. Cedar Elms turn a lovely yellow color in the fall and the Bald Cypress will be coppery orange, so you'll get nice color from either of those. Both tend to grow more upright, but different shapes (Bald Cypress is triangle shaped, and Cedar Elm more rounded). Not as familiar with Lacebark Elm but I have heard it's good for the area.

For small / medium size yards either a Cedar elm or Lace Bark elm. Live oaks grow very wide and need larger yards.

Do not get the Bald cypress. Their roots are very invasive.

Live oaks are beautiful, but like Rakin said you need a large yard for them.

I highly recommend against Live Oaks, maybe its a personal thing, but I find them the ugliest tree around. They like to look ragged, even after a good pruning. The roots also like to hug the surface and push out a lot, very annoying.

We have 2 in our yard, the backyard one has grown well and we are letting it stay, the front yard one however is getting removed as soon as we start landscaping. Not looking forward to the cost of ripping that tree out. We are considering several trees to replace it such as the cedar elm. I really want to get a Texas Ash but I'm afraid it will suffer the same fate as all the northern ash trees (pretty much all dead thanks to the ash beetle)

I love mature live oaks. I don't care for Cedar Elm. It's good we don't all like the same.
