We're a non observant Jewish family but would like our son to have more of an education than we did. Where do I start? Are there weekend Hebrew schools that will accept families like ours? We're in North Oak Cliff, so it's not exactly the Jewish mecca of info.

Call Temple Emanu-El. That's your best bet, especially if you're non-observant. They're very liberal.

Any ideas of what to expect at a kinder level? Cost, subjects traditionally covered?

Sorry, I don't know; I don't have children.

My first thought, too. If I was going to get advice regarding Hebrew school options, I'd start there.

In order to enroll in Temple Emanu-El's Hebrew school, you must become members of the synagogue. My brother wanted to do the same as you, but the monetary commitment was too much for them.

More info: Choose Your Dues - First Year Membership | Temple Emanu-El

Temple Shalom also offers Hebrew school, but you also must be members.

School FAQs

I don't know of a synagogue that doesn't require you to be a member in order to enroll in Hebrew School.

However if money is tight, most synagogues offer membership on a sliding scale fee schedule.

Hmmm, interesting. I had hoped for a member price and a non member price like I saw on Temple Emanu-El's early childhood center. We'll figure it out. Hopefully we can swing dues, education and timing. Looks like some of the education is only on weekdays.

The only way you'll get definitive answers to your questions is by picking up the phone and calling them.
