I am in the process of relocating to the Dallas area and I will be working in Dallas but my wife will be working south of downtown Fort Worth. Understanding that we will both likely be in for some commuting time, what is the most central location with excellent schools (we have 2 children very involved in sports), shopping, and entertainment? Our budget is around $550k.

IMO, if you have kids, you need to choose to live near one office and have the other spouse take the long commute. This way, both of you won't potentially be caught in wrecks/backed up traffic and continuously be late to your kids events or be very far from your kids should an emergency happen at school (sudden illness, etc).

This! The Texas sun beating you down for a 1hr+ commute each way is incredibly draining. FWIW, I lived in Uptown for many years and commuted to the FW Med Center a few days a week. Considering the distance, it's an incredibly easy and predictable drive. Only backup is in the afternoon near the 35E horseshoe construction project.

WHERE in Dallas? It's a HUGE city. If you are lucky enough to be close to a DART rail line, you could take the train instead of driving.

Las Colinas/Coppell. You will be within 30mins of both areas. If you hit 114, Fort worth is within 30mins.
