I know we are comparing 3 here, but we should have a master thread comparing all major builders

Most of it comes down to quality of materials. The illegals that are building all of Centex's jobs are the exact same ones building Paul Taylor's custom stuff, there is not much difference.

We bought a new (to us) house recently, and all of the Highland homes we looked at were older but still in fantastic shape. The same can't be said of other builders we saw. So take that for whatever its worth.

The material and the supervision are the key determinants in home quality. Post sale customer service on warranty is a separate business hardly needed if the super does his job well.

My sister's Highland built is 17 years old. From building experience to lasting quality, she is satisfied with every aspect. They are downsizing now and looking at another Highland community. It is not impossible but it is hard to find unhappy Highland homeowners. Most dissatisfied customers belong to Lennar, Pulte and Grand.

Grand is in a different dissatified class all by itself. Its probably the worst builder out there and shows with their customers.

Worse turn over of all builders in sales and construction staff. They have a huge amount of complaints thru BBB. Most realtors wont take clients there. Models are spectacular, but usually have 300k in upgrades so the home people get looks nothing like they thought it would. Notorius for keeping all earnest money no matter even if the person lost their job.

Grand Homes won the Best Builder of the Year nationally for 2011, so I think your information is out of date. All the Grand Homes we looked at during our house search (some brand new) looked great, and we ended up buying a home that was built by Grand.

That being said, you get what you pay for. I have a friend who has worked for several of the builders in this area, Grand, Meritage, Landon, Highland, etc... And their build quality is all very similar at a given price point.

The differences arise when comparing how they deal with dissatisfied customers, but there's a lot of complaints for almost all the builders out there.
