I have never been around for a hurrican hitting Houston. Apparently the last one that was this big was Hurricane Alicia, in 1983.

For those that were in the D/FW back then, how bad was it in Dallas?

I've never been in a hurricane, period, myself, but according to the National Weather Service, the latest storm track will take the center of Ike just east of the I-35 corridor.

By the time it reaches Dallas late Saturday into Sunday it should be a tropical storm and they're expecting 35-50mph winds with gusts to 60 possible south of I-20. There could be locally heavy rainfall with 4-8 inches possible so flooding is a concern.

By Monday it'll be gone and we'll see the sun again.

I don't remember Alicia just that it was bad along the coast. I was here in Dallas at the time but don't remember what went on here. The last "big" hurricane that hit Houston that did send weather our way was Rita. I remember that Saturday on the soccer field w/ my daughter. Hmmm, this one will be here on Saturday as well. Anyway, the wind was STRONG!!!!!! We did not get much rain that I remember (game time was dry) but the wind was BAD! We parents had to stand across one end of the field to catch the ball when it came that way. The wind carried it FAST at least 2 soccer field lengths before we could even catch it running after it. That was 3 years ago so you might be able to pull up the history of that one and see what went down here in the Dallas area.

In Dallas, you're way too in land to worry about anything that's hurricane power. You will get the left over of a hurricane which is simliar to some type of thunder storm with some wind and heavy rain.

This can be said about less in land cities like San Antonio and Austin.

I've been through plenty of hurricanes elsewhere and we are so far inland, and the trees here are so small, that it's a non-issue. Probably lots of rain, maybe isolated flooding like we would see in big spring storms.

Oh yeah...I remember how strong the winds from Rita were, too. And like you, I do not recall getting hardly any rain. However, the remnants of Rita went up through far East Texas, and I do know they got a lot of rain. I suppose that is what we can expect this weekend - wind gusts and lots of rain.

Some Skywarn operators are going to do an Eye party - find out where the eye will cross and drive there and enjoy the sunshine.

I remember Alicia in Dallas 1983, it did hold together to North Texas... a lot of wind and rain. I was putting in a sprinkler system at the time and it filled open trenches throwing back the job by a week. It is not usually the hurricane winds that directly affect the DFW area but the bands of storms... heavy rain, possible tornados.

By the time it reaches Dallas it will be a thunderstorm at best. Hurricanes and Tropical Storms have to be over water to maintain power. The thunderstorms can be just about as severe as a hurricane. If the remnants reach Dallas we will get strong winds and storms, and maybe hail.

The rain will be the biggest problem...flooding. wind gusts etc...so put away anything that could blow away. (unbrella etc...) some weak fences will probably come down (like in Feb)
it's a BIG storm. The outter bands could reach this area before the eye completely crosses.

If...it makes land fall as a cat 4...things could get very interesting.

When IVAN came ashore we lived in Pittsburg PA and that storm brough major flooding to the area. (who knew a hurricane could effect SW PA??)

I lived in HOuston when Alicia (cat 3) came ashore. we also had a beach house in Galveston at the time. (sea Isle west..closer to freeport) 9 out of 10 houses had MAJOR damage. It was amazing to drive along the road and have debris (boats, pieces of houses) piled 2 stories high, houses sitting in hte middle of the road etc...
We also had flooding and damage to our house in HOuston. Downtown houston had damage...lots of glass broken out of bldgs etc...

Alicia was tracking to make landfall at Corpus and that night it did a quick nothern turn and landed near freeport.
