Just asking the group, my child's school has a 5th grade field trip, over spring break, apparently put together by a private tour company. It is $2000 trip to Washington DC.

What are folk's thoughts and how common is it for the kids to do these trips

Thank You

While I'm not from Texas, I had a trips to Washington when I was in Jr High and as a senior in HS. The latter trip was one of the best experiences of my life that enabled me to get an internship at the White House in 1996. Not sure how it is post 9/11, but I happened to be 1 of 5 interns (out of 300) that offices in the actual WH. You can probably guess who was another of the 5.

The trip in 7th grade was fun, but not the most educational experience as I just wasn't old enough to appreciate everything. While I think that would apply to a lot of things when you're young, spending $2000 for a trip in 5th grade seems excessive to me.

my daughter went to DC last year in 8th grade and the trip was about $900.
$2k is way too expensive especially considering most of the museums are free. (this was with a private tour company)

IMO, 5th grade is young for that trip. they need to be a little older to appreciate it.

Is this sponsored by the school? I am just stunned. We can't ask our parents to send money for poster board or a field trip or anything moocher than ask for a pencil. Wow is all I can say.

Had we not moved to Texas, my son would have gone with his class last year. I think the cost was around $500. No way should it cost $2K even if they fly. Roundtrip tickets are usually around $250 or less. At least 90% of the things they do are free. I took my family of 4 up there for cheaper than that and we flew.

We have the same trio offered for middle school. New York to DC. $2000. That age I would consider it. 5th grade is crazy IMO.

If you play smartly then a family of 4 can have a decent trip to DC for $2000 but field trips can be a lot of fun for a kid so it's your call. It seems high for a public school trip but for an expensive private, it makes sense.

Stunned. Is this private? Public? I know friends who have sent kids on a group DC trip in middle school, and for less, but not 5th grade.

A trip from Dallas to DC for 4 people with airfare, hotel, transportation and meals for 2K for spring break?
