OP, if the commute works perhaps you can find a duplex in Arlington or Grand Prairie in your budget

Thank you all for your information. I guess "nice" does mean something different to each person. We are coming from St. Paul, MN and are used to areas that are definitely NOT crime free. Nice to us means that the house is pretty much in one piece. Our current home gets a lake in the basement every time it rains. A fenced in yard would be wonderful and in an area that isn't gang ridden would be great. Right now we are surrounded.
