You don't consider 98% lilly white. You seem to think I have a problem with people in Highland Park when I really don't. I think it would be a great place to stay because it really is in a beautiful part of the city. People who live there earned the right to do so. I don't have a issue with them at all but if you ask anyone where is the lilly white part of town, Highland Park would be the first name they rattle off. For some reason you think this is negative while I think its just the makeup of the city. I'm not saying what I am saying based on what a friend told me. My knowledge is based on the amount of time I have lived here. If anyone ask me should the move to Highland Park I would tell them its a great place to live and they have excellent schools. Just understand that it has very little diversity and you are will be isolated from the typical problems people have in the innercity. Thats as accurate as I can described the place and would welcome other citizen comments.

now that the thread has been bowhacked to pieces let's take a look at what brought us all here together in the first place:

Southlake or Highland Park?
Hi:
We are moving back to the Dallas area after living away for several years. My husband will be traveling frequently, which I know the airport is close to Southlake, but he also doesn't mind traveling from HP to the airport either. I have never been to Southlake and I am wondering what insight anyone can give me as to what each location offers. I guess I am concerned about Southlake being "far out" from what was my normal roaming zone of North Dallas, etc. but the Southlake Town Square from the internet looks really cute with the shops on the sidewalk and as if it has that small town feel and charm, which I really like. Any info that anyone could provide as a compare and contrast would be great. Thanks in advance.

Yep, that would be the OP or original post...can we all get back to it please?? Any more off topic chatter will be removed so let's get back on track folks.

There are those who enjoy living in the city. If you do, Highland Park is for you. There are others who enjoy the suburbs. This is Southlake. I'm a multi-million miler on American Airlines. I enjoy getting off the plane and being less than 15 minutes from Southlake - from gate to sofa.

You are so right! Southlake looks a lot like many SoCal communities and I think purposely. I know because I am a CA transplant and I can't keep my wife away from Southlake. I was tired of SoCal and that is why we moved here. There are so many great communities in TX like HP that have character and charm. That is what I like about TX, its' character and charm. There is nothing wrong with Southlake. It is nice, clean, has great shopping, restaurants, but it really has a SoCal feel without the palm trees. Nothing wrong with it, just too familiar coming from SoCAL. Just my opinion.

And the verdict is.....
Ok, as the OP of this thread...we just got back from Dallas. We still can't decide between HP/Southlake!! We loved them both...in different ways. Southlake, I liked even more than I thought I would (as a native Dallasite) and loved all of the trees, the town centre, the proximity to the airport, the upscale/rural feel. We have two offers written up--one on a home in Southlake--new and large and one on a home in the Park Cities--smaller than the Southlake one but charming and old. We would be happy in either one, I'm sure. Dh doesn't mind making the commute from Southlake to work and we LOVE that house, but would we regret passing up an opportunity to live in the Park Cities?? By the way, there are newer homes we saw in Park Cities, but I love the old ones for their charm and character. So, two completely different ends of the spectrum for our choices!! I'll keep you all posted!!

As far as the commute goes, have your DH drive it in the morning. I think he might be amazed at how bad the "funnel" is by the airport. A normal commute might not be bad, but because of the congestion in that particular area - it just might tip the balances one way or the other.
Please take this next thought process as just a glimpse into my mind, not anything more. If I had a choice between two locations that I liked, but one meant a 45 minute additional commute each way, while I don't really mind driving, I do mind losing time with my friends and family. During the week, my wife and I get home from work about 6:30 since we both have 15 minute commutes, which means we have about 3.5 hours to spend together because we go to bed at 10pm (yeah, we're boring). If that time were crunched down to 2 hours due to an additional 1.5 hour commute, it would crimp too much on my quality of life. So, while the 1.5 hours in the car doesn't really bother me, losing that time with my family would. Hopefully this helps look at things through a different set of eyes.
Brian

aeh, sounds like you have a couple of good options, very exciting!
Will your hubby be working IN Dallas? Southlake would be brutal daily commute imo. I'm thinking along the lines that Brian ^ above me is. You mentioned the airport from Southlake - getting to DFW airport from Dallas is not bad at all. I dropped my kids off at school just before 8 am and had my inlaws to the DFW airport by 8:30. Love field is a snap!

Yes, good posts Spree and Brian. We did put an offer on the Park Cities house, mainly because of the reasons you guys mention. We'll see if we get it. Thanks for confirming what we were already thinking (yet still strangely mulling over....)
