OP equals "Original Poster", i.e., the person that started the thread with their questions, you in this case.
Also, just take what's been said thus far with a grain of salt... a disgruntled former college student does not make for a well-informed opinion. I know there are many satisfied residents in that area, but don't have any first-hand info that might be of help, so, if I were you, I'd do a search on Denton as there have been many previous threads with better info on Denton than you, unfortunately, received here.
To do a search,
Select Search at the top of your screen
Select Advanced Search
Use Denton as your keyword to search
Select Dallas as your forum to search
Submit
Also, there is a local forum for the area that might be of help, too:
380Guide.com - Your guide to life in the U.S. 380 corridor - Serving Aubrey Texas, Celina Texas, Cross Roads Texas, Denton Texas, Frisco Texas, Krugerville Texas, Lakewood Village Texas, Little Elm Texas, McKinney Texas, Oak Point Texas, Paloma Creek
Good luck to ya!

I got to spend time at both universities and I will say I preferred TWU by far over NTSU/UNT. As for them being "stuck in a time warp", it sure wasn't because they did not accept alternate lifestyles. Half the people in the art building were in a same sex relationship (students/staff/professors) and it was OPEN (sorry, take it to a room and not in the stairwell and I don't care if it is opposite sex). Both schools are pretty progressive in many ways. Oh, and this was back when UNT was NTSU too.
Now, those outside of the campus life.............now they were weird. YIKES! I'm pretty sure MUCH has changed since I last spent days on end up there but back then (and I'm talking over 20 years) it was WEIRD. If you were a commuter from the Dallas area (I commuted from Carrollton when I did not live up there) if you wrote a check to a store they wanted "a local address". WTH!!!!!! I live FRIGGIN 20 MILES AWAY so it's not like I'm from another country or in their eyes planet.
I also worked at a local bank. Now THAT was SCARY!!!! I watched a MILLION times this guy that work there bring the cash over to the drive-in tellers. OMYGOSH, this is BAD. He would get out and open the back door and start stacking the bundles of cash on top of the roof. Then he would close the door go to the other side and do the same. WTH!! He as ALONE every time! And here sat I don't know HOW MUCH cash on top of the roof of this car in plain daylight. Oh, and they had these tubes that went from the main safe to the tellers outside in the drive-in. If that was down they would get this same guy (high school kid that weighed about 100 lbs) to escort you. He would ask for your coat so he could wrap it up in so that no one would see it. LMAO!!!!! Like dude, you leave 100's of thousands of dollars in plain site sitting ON TOP OF A CAR. But you want me to take OFF MY COAT for you to wrap up $25K IN FRIGGIN DECEMBER when it is COLD outside. Nah, no one will notice I'd just take it and stick it in my purse and go. LOL!!! I told my friends if they were ever short on cash I had a sure fire way to get us some Never did it but man it would have been SOOOOOO EASY to have robbed that bank. I had to pinch myself everyday at that place. Best line I got from my boss was when I asked off for the dates I needed for SURGERY! I did it over the Christmas holidays so I would not miss school. He said they could not do it then I needed to wait. WHAT!!! Like it's SOOOOO BUSY, lol. Half the towns population will be GONE during this time. LOL!!! I should have KNOWN I was in trouble when I was going around applying at the banks and they would come RUNNING out when they saw my application about jumping me. I mean literally WAY TOO EAGER. I guess they had never had anyone w/ teller experience put in an application.
Anyway, Denton has changed a lot since then as it is GROWING like crazy. The one thing that is really weird that happened last week is that Krystal's Hamburgers shut down. They stayed steady but it just was not cutting it for some reason.
Oh, and the bank this is a killer. LOL!!! The car this guy used was the bank presidents. It was a Ford Crown Victoria in MINT GREEN! I mean it stuck out like a sore thumb and was VERY noticeable so stacking all this cash on it was even MORE SO! Everyone of those people in that bank just thought that was the most beautiful car.

NTSU was a long time ago.
UNT is pretty cool with GLBT folks but GLBT folks there are not the easiest to get along with. They are difficult people. Unless you actually tried to befriend or chill with them, then you really don't know.
Again, the culture was weird, snobbish, and uppity for no clear or obvious reasons. Denton isnt' really a rich community so I didnt understand the uppity of the culture.

It was NTSU thru the mid 80's then changed to UNT.
I knew plenty of GLBT people. Had no problem w/ them (minus two that were faculty but that was a different story). I was just pointing out that even BACK THEN they were around and no one did anything and they were "doing it in the open" moreso than heterosexual couples.
The only "uppity" culture I experienced were the few students that were there living on daddy's credit card. They were the more "snobbish" but thankfully there were not many of them. Doubt a family living outside of the campus is going to have to deal w/ much of this.
The regular townsfolk were the "weird" ones. I can hang w/ the wide range of the student body from one end to the other but the old folks that lived there back then were just plain WEIRD! They were NOT "charming" and more resentful than anything. I think that is probably the better term to use, resentful. For what I don't know as if it was not for those two universities that place would have had NOTHING for a long time. Those people should be sitting in a rocker in a nursing home by now and hopefully did not pass on the same attitude. Most of the kids that grew up there back then left town.

It seems like the regular townsfolk attitude or the rich kid attitude has taken over for the overall university attitude too.
This is how I experienced it: Uppity, over competitive, and very very resentful of people that are different.
Just looking at UNT you realize it is a pretty progressive school because a lot of people go there for music degrees and art degrees. So you do see a large and influential art crowd, but they are some of the most uppity and snobbish folks I've ever met. Such an uncomfortable experience, I felt like I couldn't be who I am (no I am not a tranny or some freak) and I felt like people were yanking my chain, trying to manipulate me to act in one way or another, It seemed that people there got satisfaction in making me feel bad as if they were hoping that I would drop out of school. I didn't get a feeling of belonging, satisfaction, and peace, there was always some sort of drama, some sort of problem, some sort of issue dealing with rejection or being snubbed, or having to deal with somebody's bad or raunchy attitude, the nightmare just never ended. It was so creepy!
