First, yes I know what letmegooglethatforyou is, but I'm being lazy and don't want to read through a ton of multiple page PDFs.

Now that we have that out of the way, does anyone have some info and qualifications on this? My parents are looking at moving out and getting a few acres. I know there's a way to get a tax break depending on multiple factors, and that's what I'm trying to figure out for them. Can they have a few goats, 3-5 acres and it would be considered ag land?

Also, what kind of tax break would they be looking at?

It's seriously complex.

If they intend to be farmers and make a living off their land then they should qualify.

If they just get a few pet goats to cheat on taxes then they should not (and will not) qualify.

Ag Exempt is granted to help actual farmers/ranchers produce food at reasonable costs by giving them a break on their taxes. The land really has to be used for production, not as a hobby farm.

If they are following the rules, that's not cheating. That was the purpose of post.
