Late 40s empty nesters moving to Dallas
We have an opportunity to move to Dallas. I would work in downtown Dallas and my wife (who travels about 50-60% of the the time via airline) would work out of a home office when she's not on the road. Our kids are in college so school districts don't have the importance they once did. And I don't want the long commute (over 30 minutes). We are looking in the $350K range. Plus we have dogs so a condo/townhouse is probably out.
Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A few places come to mind. For airport convenience and newer homes I would say Coppell and some parts of North Irving, Hackberry creek is a golf course community in north Irving too.
Closer to downtown is Lakewood and Lake Highlands where you will have homes with more character, from 1920s... close to White Rock Lake, where you can enjoy the outdoors with your dogs. Walk to a lot of area restaurants and very convenient to shopping.

White Rock Lake has the best dog park in Texas. Lakewood zip codes are 75214 (Lakewood Proper) and 75206 (M-Streets, Lower Greenville, Knox-Henderson). Also 75223 contains Hollywood Heights which will soon have a wonderful hike and bike trail - it's also next to Samuell Grand Park (Shakespeare Festival) and the Tenison Golf Courses. Lakewood Country Club golf course borders its north side.
10 minutes or less to downtown and 30 minutes to DFW Airport when you go at odd times with less traffic. When the Tenison Trail/East Dallas Veloway is completed in a year or two you will literally be able to walk, jog or ride your bike downtown.

I Love lakewood and if my husband job had been in Downtown Dallas, this is where I would start. Lovely older homes, big trees etc...
If you want more suburbia then probably Coppell is a good choice for the prox. to both DFW and Dallas.

This really is dog central - we have a very active Lakewood Pet Watch which finds lost pets, facilitates adoptions, etc. Most of us get weekly emails. Plus you can take your dog to many of the sidewalk cafes - we even have an event called Walk and Wag http://lakewood-now.net/view/article/1518 and there's thePetsmart Dog Bowl each year in the Art Deco masterpiece Fair Park, located nearby.. You'd be hard pressed to find something decent in Lakewood for $350k, wouldn't you?

I have no idea about finding something for $350K in that area .......that's why we are here!! Tell me more folks! We can forego large square footage, but we know we don't have the time, skills, or effort for doing a renovation on a fixer-upper. Thanks for all your comments!

There is a lot on the market that doesn't need fixing up in Lake Highlands and Lakewood around 350K.

We did looks at some houses in the University Hills area that were in our price range. They're between DFW and Love so that'd be nice for my wife. I'm a bit concerned about the posts I've read relating to Irving.
Additional comments and input gladly welcome!!!

University Hills in north Irving is a beautiful, safe and well-planned area... and definitely NOT your usual "cookie-cutter" neighborhood you'll find in most of the metroplex... that I believe you'll enjoy for years to come, within close proximity to every shopping, travel and recreational activity you may desire. Here is the link to the Las Colinas Association site... select the Village Association Info tab from the main site then by selecting University Hills Association you'll be able to view much more detailed info on the area.

Lake Highlands, for sure, but probably not Lakewood. Lakewooder would most be able to give you realistic pricing for all the different neighborhoods in Lakewood.
I live in Lake Highlands and really like it. Depending on what neighborhood you choose in Lake Highlands, you can pretty much get anything you like - larger, smaller, older, newer. What are some of your criteria other than yard, close-ish to downtown and not a fixer-upper?
