areas of Plano and the surrounding suburbs already have enough workers and residents to sustain small restaurants during lunch hour during the week.

Plano is not a bedroom community to the extend Murphy is. You really should get out more, take a look at the Legacy West alone area where Toyota, Liberal Mutual and Chase will bring more jobs to Plano this year than Murphy has. Restaurants need this jobs not just roof tops to sustain a successful business.

Agreed.
Murphy only has 17,708 residents according to wiki. Most of its jobs are Walmart, fast food, and city employees.

Toyota will have 4000 jobs.
Liberty Mutual will bring 5000 jobs.
JPMorgan Chase will bring 6000 jobs.
Legacy West is expected to house more than 20,000 jobs upon completion.
Plano itself has a population of 269,776 residents. (as of 2012)

Wylie on the other hand has 41,427 residents, with a median income of $58,393 per household. Do you think that will support an "upscale restaurant that serves a decent bottle of wine pared with a good meal." Also, the racial makeup of the city was 90.45% Europid,2.07% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.30% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.44% of the population. Not much diversity of population to support diverse, non-chain restaurants.

"Hayes, the franchising expert, noted that building some franchised restaurants can cost $800,000 or more. Franchise Business Review, which lists 40 of the top food franchises based on franchisee satisfaction, pegs the average initial start-up cost for a full-service, sit-down restaurant at $1.2 million."
Who's bringing dinner? Dozens of non-Texas chains look to expand here | Restaurants | Dallas News

Franchises are usually safer bets than independents, with known product and advertising.

Makes me want to spend my life savings opening an upscale restaurant in eastern Collin County. Not.

I moved out here to be away from all of the stuff that attracts traffic and congestion.

DUH, Plano is going to have more industry that Murphy. However, there are industrial businesses in the Murphy, Wylie area.

There are restaurants in Wylie that serve wine. The Rock and Cotton Patch are two that come to mind. Murphy has several as well. There are several places that are BYOB.

Plano is not considered a "bedroom community" at all. It is a city. A large city that has industry, retail, commercial zones, etc. Wylie nor Murphy will ever be that size, and that is a good thing!

I hate the restaurants in Wylie. Now they are building Bush's Chicken which is exactly what isn't needed. Cowboy Chicken, Golden Chick, Chick-A-Fil, and three more chicken places are just down the street. For comparison, there are zero BBQ joints in that area.

Oh, did the barbecue place under the awning along 78 north of town go away? That was a great place for lunch outside in spring and fall.

We love Cowboy Chicken. (Are you including Murphy in your list of chicken places? Murphy does have too many of them.)

We also frequent Dickey's Barbecue on TX 78 in Wylie. Did you forget them?
