You don't need to do this if you have an insulated house with modern plumbing (freeze proof sillcock) and your house has reasonable temperatures inside.

Forgot to turn on my heat last night. I woke up this morning and it was 63 degrees inside. Not too bad considering it was 34 outside.

My house is 60 years old. I cover my outdoor faucet because it's $2 for a cover vs thousands for a burst pipe.

When I lived in houses with stand alone outdoor faucets, I would put 5-6 layers of newspaper around the entire pipe, down to the ground. Then I would use duct tape to secure the newspaper around the pipe. Then I would use a plastic bag to cover all of that to waterproof it. Then, I would cover that with a plastic container turned upside down and weighted on top; something like a bucket or small trash can. Might be overkill, but I never had a pipe freeze, and I went through some temps in the teens.

In the older houses with the faucet coming out the wall of the house, you can buy foam covers for a couple of bucks at the hardware store. These faucets aren't as exposed and do have warmth from the interior of the house to help keep them from freezing.

Our house is 10 or so and we use faucet covers
Most faucets stick out some from the wall
Doesn't take much metal exposed to free water at low temps
Why risk it?
You aren't watering from them anyway...
