We need several things done (a little painting, replacing a door, some insulating, a lot of electrical work) to our house and wondered whether we should get a general contractor to do all of it or find different companies/people to do each individual part -- e.g., hire an electrician, hire a painter, etc.)

Any thoughts?

That doesn't sound too bad in terms of coordinating and scheduling. A GC would just add another layer of cost to you unless they were able to get you better rates from their subcontractors than you'd get dealing with them directly.

I used DFW Improved for my roof last year. They do everything except build new. I found them to be very reliable and honest. You can call them for an estimate. It will probably be higher than what you could do yourself but you don't have to worry about selecting people and scheduling them, etc. Whoever you get, check them out on the BBB web site as well as Angieslist. DFW Improved has very good ratings.
