If you are willing to live in an older, privately owned unit without fancy modern amenities, your budget is fine. I suggest looking in 75205, 75206 and 75219... Knox Henderson, m streets and north oak lawn. There are plenty of places for rent in your budget, but they are not fancy. When I moved to Dallas the first time 20 years ago, I lived for several years in large dumpy apartments in great locations and loved it. Good luck!

^ This. I also recommend 75204. I have a nice place in the area well within your budget. Just don't expect a pool and gym. Just a few minutes from downtown.

North of 30 also....Lake Highlands area apartments range from $600-1200 for one bedrooms.

Same for the apartments along DNT... north of the Galleria.

Anything along NW Highway also.

$900 for a 0ne bedroom is a realistic price (excluding uptown & Downtown) for Dallas county.

Would you want to live in the Lake Highlands neighborhoods where you can rent for $600 a month? Have you seen those areas?

I don't know anyone in a 1 bedroom who is paying less than $1k a month in rent.

I am...in the Village. It can be done, but it's not always easy to find. "Safe" is relative though. I grew up in the LH apartments. Some are pretty safe and others are quite dangerous, but it's definitely hit or miss. Obviously someone from inner ring Detroit will feel like they can walk down the street wearing a suit of gold and diamonds in LH and be safe, but a person from a nicer neighborhood might be terrified of the creeping blight (pawn shops, check cashing joints, liquor stores, lavanderias etc.).

There are a lot of options, both touring and homegrown, but it can be fractured among Dallas, Fort Worth, and Denton. If you're in Dallas, check out venues like the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff, the Granada on Greenville Ave., or any of the Deep Ellum places like Trees, The Bomb Factory, Allgood Cafe, and others. If you're in Fort Worth, head to Lola's, Shipping & Receiving, or (for country) Billy Bob's.

What type of music are you interested in? If you're interested in jazz or world music -- and you're moving from somewhere like NYC, LA, San Francisco, or Montreal -- then you're going to feel like you've moved to the far side of the moon. The options tend to be limited. But for alt/indie-rock, pop, EDM, hip-hop, country, mainstream rock, and classic rock, you're fine.

Easy there, partner ... that's a loaded question. Ask 100 different people and you'll get 100 different answers. The real question is, why does DFW even have a hundred barbecue joints?

You can cool off in a couple of nice places: South Padre Island (which is really not that close) ... and December!
