Were these areas known for something else back then?
Every place outside of 'sophisticated' cities are nothing but brothels and tax fraud locations.

I was born in '86 and didn't really hear about anything north of Plano until high school when we had to play certain schools in team sports (Allen etc).

My dad and uncles used to go hunting in Frisco in the 1980's. A family friend had a "ranch" up there. Don't know what happened to that family but hopefully they made a killing selling their land to a developer!!

McKinney was in HP's football district in the 1990's so knew about it. Same with Sherman, Denison, etc from playoff football games.

Definitely did not know what or where "The Colony" was until the last decade when I began working in Plano.

I'm fascinated by the "body shops" reference. I'm not catching why the father was laughing?

I thought it was a nice suburb, like similarly named First Colony in Sugar Land, judging from the name and how far out it is. But it seems the Dallas-based posters tell a different story.

I've been working on genealogy and found out recently that part of my family (Kerley) were some of the original founders of the town of Lebanon, part of Frisco now. Growing up in Dallas I had never heard of Frisco.

Not me. It's a suburb. Doesn't appeal to me but I feel like there is some sort of The Colony joke that is going over my head. I'm baffled.

I never liked The Colony driving through, but it didn't seem very undesirable. The data on its Wikipedia page for poverty and income doesn't paint The Colony as being very undesirable.

In the mid 1980's there was a really sketchy strip club on 121 near where Old Denton Road dead ended into 121. This was between Lewisville and the Colony, but closer to the Colony. Most of that area was still farm land at the time and there may have been some auto salvage yards around there. I remember hearing stories about the pink or purple buildings on 121 near the Preston Rd intersection being a massage parlor or brothel. Older guys I worked with had joked about going there. The buildings were still there in the late 70's but by then the "business" appeared to have been shut down.

The Colony was considered pretty low end starter homes back in the 70s' and early 80's when it was being built. I can't imagine that it has aged very well.

I have not been in that area since the late 80's , I doubt I would recognize it today.

Some of The Colony is very nice and some is even high end. You don't see those parts from 121 or 423. Most of the older sections are run-down, respectable but houses showing obvious age/wear.
