With the exception of weather and beaches (actually not a big beach fan), there are no amenities in Los Angeles that you won't be able to find in Dallas. Also, never had an issue with racism until I moved to L.A. and an LAPD cop stopped me to check license /registration. When I asked why I was stopped, he actually said "How do I know you didn't steal this nice car". He checked my info and then drove off. So go figure, racism is everywhere. By the way, I'm a 30-something single AA female.

The funny thing about this is that blacks relocating to the South from the North say that they dealt with more racism there than they do in the South. I can't believe a New Yorker would comment by saying it is dangerous for blacks to drive through the South.

When the light rail opens next year, it might start to pick up again. I've begun to hear from people who live down there that crowds are starting to increase on weekends. With luck, the adjacent Fair Park area, which has started to show signs of life, will continue to blossom as well when the light rail opens there too.
Then there's the Arts District which is something of a ghost town now but, with the completion of the three new facilities next year and the eventual park that's going to cover the Woodall Rogers Freeway (forming a bridge between Uptown and downtown), that should start to change.
Until then, there's Uptown (West Village area specifically), Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff, Lower Greenville, Knox-Henderson, Cedar Springs Avenue in Oak Lawn and, to a certain extent, Main Street downtown. Granted, none of these is South Beach (I really miss Lincon Road) or the Las Vegas strip (cities that can party around the clock are definitely going to have a different feel from those that shut up at 2 a.m.) and I really wish they'd re-pave Greenville and fix the sidewalks (same for Deep Ellum). But these areas still can be entertaining. Especially on Thursday through Saturday nights when there are more crowds about.

O RLY? Well, Atlanta must be in transition to, because Buckhead used to be the spot, and all those clubs on Peachtree are long gone. Atlantic Station, Midtown and the Peters Street Area seem to be the places to be, but still, things here are a lot duller than they used to be. But I keep hearing about how "dull" and "dead" Dallas is compared to Atlanta. Especially now that Deep Ellum is undergoing transition and there are cranky residents on Lower Greenville trying to shut those bars down.
Of course, with the economy and gas prices the way they are, people just don't have as much disposable income to go out partying like they used to.

Phoenix, what part of NC are you from? I commuted between NC (Chapel Hill/Charlotte) and DFW....however I'm mostly in NC now.
As for DFW, you will love it. It's literally urban sprawl!!!! Nothing like Charlotte let alone Raleigh. Be prepared for freeways, expressways, etc. Really different from NC. As for Dallas, Carrollton is a nice area as is Hebron (just north of Carrolton); the legacy park area of Frisco and W Plano. Just depending on you desire of surrounding amenities, etc, will depend where you live. Many of these areas have grown considerably and are more racially diverse compared to 15-20 yrs ago. LOL, I remember when it was rare to see minorities in many of these areas. Now, not so much so. You also have Lewisville but it's a bit much older but with some new areas as well. Your commute time will largely dictate where and how far you live in Dallas.
Just drive around and get a feel for all the areas and communities. TONS of apartments to choose from in Dallas! It's a matter of choice. The freeways literally line with them here! LOL
