Young Blk Professional moving to DALLAS...in need of advice
I would like to get some information on the Far North, North Dallas Area. I'm a Black professional moving from the east coast for a new job that would like to know what's it like in the Dallas area and North Dallas area for young AA males (26-30). Where can you get a haircut? Where are the churches? What's the nightlife like? What areas are good and safe to live? I'm particularly interested in the Carrolton area and surrounding areas. I'll be working in Far North Dallas so I'm also looking for good apartments and communities. I would also like to know how is it for blacks in Dallas. I know its not Atlanta or DC so I would like to get some input and some advice on the DFW area. I'm not racisit but I like to associate with people of my own culture with similar interests as well was with those of other races. All comments are welcome. THANKS!

I moved from Los Angeles just about a month ago to north Dallas near Addison. I am just like you as far as what to want in a community. As a 31 year old black man, I had to admit, I was kind of nervous about moving to Dallas coming from California due to the unfair stereotype that many Dallas citizens have inherited. But from what I witness, North Dallas is pretty diverse. It seems like a younger crowd that includes every race. There are tones of restaurants over in my area on a street called belt line rd. For the most part, race relation seems to be good (I haven't had any problems yet). I like it because even though it is the south, it still has a lot of west coast traits as far as diversity.

That is encouraging. Most people tell me coming from NC that I would really like Dallas. I hope I do. I just want to get a heads up before I move there.

As a 31 year old black woman, I came here from SC and enjoy it very much. I also lived in Atlanta for a number of years. Along with Addison check out Las Colinas and the Valley Ranch area of North Irving. Dallas is very similar to Atlanta.
The racial stereotypes are truly unfair to Dallas. There is a good bit of self segregation because people want live around people that share their culture and experiences. Beyond that race relations are very good. I believe it is due to the fact that Dallas is a fairly young city.
As far the nightlife, there is not one general area in Dallas. Most clubs and social hangouts are spaced around the area. And that makes Dallas very car friendly.
Most of your AA churches are on the southside of the city. You may have to commute to church. I do. You should come out an visit on a weekend to get a real feel for the city. Hope this helps.

Also, check out dallasblack.com or blacksindallas.com. They have some good information about business, nightlife, networking, etc.
I recently obtained a job here in Atlanta, so I may be hear a bit longer than I thought, but D/FW is still high on my list!

Thanks for the information. I'm from the Carolinas as well and I have visited Atlanta many times and like the southern yet urban amentities of the city. I will be working in the Carrolton area so I don't want to long of a commute but I will check out the areas that you mentioned: Las Colinas, North Irving, and Valley Ranch when looking for apartments. I also wanted to know how are the Plano, Lewisville, and Frisco areas?

If your working in Carrollton I would suggest Carrollton, Lewisville, Addision or some of the apartment right off the tollroad around the Frankford exit. All will much closer than Valley Ranch, Plano or Frisco.

Hey im a 24yr old AA professional male. You can get a haircut in PLano at a place called Elite Kutz-(972) 673-0114 all the Barbers are good!!! I moved here from NC but from WV. THere are a lot of churches here!!! I go to the Bishop Jakes church, the Potters House but havent been able to do much since ive been working weekend nights. I stay in Richardson because its down the street for my job. As far a race being an issue, i havent ran into to that yet but i guess it couldnt be worse than WV lol. But there is some stuff to do but majority of it takes place on the weekends. And also i found it hard to meet people down here!!!!!

Thanks for the info. I've been doing a lot of research on the internet. What are some of the best apartment complexes in the area? I have my choices but I plan to visit to get a vibe for the area. Any suggestions for nice apartment communities that are quiet and safe? I heard there are quite a few burgarlaries. Have any of you had a problem?

This info is helpful. I am a 32yr old AA female moving to Dallas from DC the real "Chocolate City" this month (April 08). I've visited a number of occassions. My beau (who is from Omaha) and I have decided on Dallas. I am also looking for a JOB and a SOCIAL NETWORK. I know this will be a HUGE change for me, coming from the culturally diverse and socially rich network of DC. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHERE I CAN GO TO INQUIRE ABOUT JOBS AND SOCIAL NETWORKS PLEASE
