The processing, decision tree, sensor integration aren't there yet for the situational awareness necessary for a safe and effective driverless car even 50 years from now.
There are already driverless cars on the road serving customers in the US.

They're glorified driver assist, and not meant to be hands-off and unmonitored. The systems are also prone to spectacular, newsworthy failures.

In best cases, they overreact to doors opening off to the side, they can't navigate moisture reflective surfaces. Roads are always being worked on,....

No. You are way behind on the technology. I'm not talking about Telsas or other cars for purchase. There are cabs in multiple cities that are driver less.

The technology is still unsuitable for public interaction.

Pharm companies have minted money marketing to the public that products are suitable for use. Doesn't make them safe or responsive.

And nobody wants to have to program a food smeared, un-upgraded, legacy, semi-responsive touch screen in the dash to program a car just to move it to the other side of the driveway for the lawnmower. Nor have to argue with a semi-responsive voice interface to be allowed to get off the ramp on a whim just in time to make the exit to the Cracker Barrel that just appeared beyond the tree line.

The right tool for the job isn't always automation.
Very true. Sadly, there's too many deaf ears in this country and the "cult of convenience" is sucking the human soul out of our culture.

Somewhere else. Probably not Dallas.

If you speak to Millennials with Tech skills who aren't Texans, Dallas isn't even on their radars as career destinations.

They are the target recruits for Amazon.
