It's no worse than anywhere else you go. You can find pretentious people in every city. You just have to ignore them.

What is lacked in substance is (attempted) to be compensated for in BS. Some other areas do have this, but Dallas (and to the north, in general) has this pretty heavy. Sort of mind-bogglin when you have to deal with the "image is everything" retards.
And watch your money around them, and never let them owe you more than you care to walk away from. BS'ers do not pay their bills. If they are "flashing" any money related status symbols -- e.g. high dollah watch, BWMer/Benz, you get the idea -- there is a good chance you are dealing with a bum. It is pretty much a ghetto hood mentality of "bling-bling" gone to college with a Marketing degree. Not much difference between Gold Rims and Gold Teeth compared to the Gold Watch and Ring.
The real dirtbags wrap their game with little "Jesusy" symbols like fishes and crosses on their car or business cards.

Some areas of Dallas and burbs have a higher concentration of snobs than others. Having lived in the northern suburb for over 20 years, I can attest to the preponderance of folks who care more about impressing others than being friendly. However, after having traveled extensively for my job, (to places like New York, Atlanta, San Jose, Phoenix) and visiting family in Iowa and Chicago, I can definitely say that, even with the snobs, the people here are overall, much friendlier than those up north. People here will generally return a smile or hello when given, and I noticed that folks up north wouldn't even make eye contact and walked around with a scowl on their faces. Here, some of the grocery stores still have their employees take your purchases out to your car and load them for you...they insist. Most folks will talk to you while you're waiting in line to buy something, and most of the retail help is friendly (most, not all).
Once you get on the major freeways, though, all bets are off. These are some of the craziest, most aggressive drivers I've ever seen. Especially the ones in Beamers and Lexuses. Of course, I've seen soccer moms in the vans doing 20 over the speed limit, with the kids plastered against the back window of the van....I guess they're running late to practice. lol
It's really friendly for the most part, but just like anywhere, you will find good and bad every where you go. I have had great neighbors the least 3 places I've lived, but, to be fair, I did make an effort to meet them and form friendships with them. I have encountered the rich women who dress up like a formal dinner party just to go shopping at the mall. I had a saleslady at Neiman Marcus correct me for saying "purse" when it should be "handbag." Give me a break, if I buy it at Target, it's a purse, trust me.
I don't typically let these things bother me, and for the most part, enjoy living here. My friends/family who come in from out of town remark that the people are friendlier than where they live, so there must be something to it.
Be yourself, blow off the snobs, and you'll be fine.
Happy Easter!

No. I've seen more pretentious people in Denton, which is the least likely place you'd be expecting arrogance.
Dallas people are cool.

From all the time that I've visited Dallas, I've definitely noticed an air of pretention like here in Atlanta and in other major Sunblet metros. But just like Atlanta, there are plenty of places in Dallas that you can go to escape it--namely the East Dallas neighborhoods and Oak Cliff.
