Austin vs. Dallas
My boyfriend and I were all set to make our way to Austin from Detroit. We want somewhere that's warm, has job opportunities, has lots of activities and still has the same "urban city feel" as Detroit. Austin has been labeled as the most liberal city in all of Texas, and that set well with us too. We did notice that there is only a 10% population of AA's though, and it's not that we just want to be surrounded by a bunch of people that look like us, but we really like diversity, and being "whited out" (for lack of a better term) doesn't really appeal to us. Now I've been on wiki and I see that Dallas is 45% black, which is more than white surprisingly. I also don't want to be in a perpetual "hood" with a bunch of crazy hoodlums either. I told a friend about our impending move, because she used to live in Texas, and she told me that Dallas would be better. Can anyone shed any light on this, what are the main differences between Austin and Dallas? (And no I don't care about the Dallas Cowboys or their cheeleaders before anyone posts that as a response...lol)

The size of Dallas and the whole metro is quite a bit larger than Austin, so there will be more to do as far as city activities, museums, amusement parks, etc. Also, the Dallas area is more diverse. I don't think Austin is that much more liberal than Dallas. The suburbs tend to be a bit more conservative, however.

I don't know about that statement. Austin has a lot of old liberals with money, who maintain their liberalness quite well within the city. Dallas isn't liberal-free by any stretch of the imagination, but its spotted around the city, and not just focused in one big area.
You are dead on regarding the suburbs, far more conservative than the city. Although, Denton does maintain a small liberal bastion. Luckily, they don't own any property, and are being smoked out *pun intended*

I agree Dallas is diverse and has enough liberalism for you to notice and appreciate it.
Austin is mostly white, a bit boring and bland, and I can't tell that it is any more liberal than Dallas.

My husband and I have worked and sold homes to many couples of all races, and they truly like living in the Dallas area. Moderator cut: soliciting

Reason: soliciting is strictly prohibited

Because most people in Austin stay in Austin and never venture too far. Whereas us Dallasites tend to travel outside our little bubble regularly.

Is that a sly hint that Dallasites are more open-minded?
