North end of White Rock Lake (looking toward Lakewood/Downtown), just south of Flag Pole Hill and Norbuck Park -- trail leads north all the way to LBJ/Hillcrest, trail soon to lead southwest to Downtown: Renovations aim to make White Rock Lake Park trail safer, easier to access | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Breaking News for Dallas-Fort Worth | Dallas Morning News

I totally enjoy White Rock Lake and go there regularly. However, the city really needs to improve cleanup. I walked around the lake yesterday and at some locations it had huge amounts of trash in the water and on the shore. Disgusting.

Default Why Dallas?

Well I have lived here most of my life and am origanally from Europe. I have traveled around the US and found a lot more interesting places other than Dallas (DFW) area and the only reason I am still here is because of my job. If you plan on moving here be sure you have plenty of attitude and really like rude people. The things to do here are great if you like eating out a lot but as far as places to see, not so much. I have read some of the responses and it is true there is a lot to see in Texas but all of it is outside the DFW area. If I were you move and wanted to move to Texas I would check into Houston, Austin or even some town in East Texas. So if you want to move here come visit for awhile and see for yourself that you can see it all in one weekend.

Default Outdoors in Dallas

The culture of Dallas is to say, "It's a beautiful day! Let's get in our air conditioned cars and drive to an air conditioned mall, restaurant or theatre." But you don't have to conform. White Rock Lake is awesome for picnics and walks on a cement trail. Grapevine lake will make you think you are a 1000 miles away. It is a hilly dirt trail along a beautiful lake with sailboats. Rowlett Creek, on the other side of town, is a dirt trial where I've seen possums, snakes, beavers, and of course rabbits and squirrels. We have Cleburne State Park and hour southwest; We have Cedar Hill State Park on the southern edge. Lake Texhoma is beautiful and has a walking trial all along the lake (1.5 hours north). As far as our weather is concerned, our winter is only a month long. July and August are hot, but if people just went outside they would get used to it. We have great restaurants, great shopping and cheap housing.

The Arboretum on Garland road is expansive and gorgeous. It overlooks White Rock lake and is a wonderful way to while away the day. They have regular outdoor concerts and Mommy and Me events.

A metropolitan area of 6 million people will generate just about every type of human activity there is. If someone can't find something to do in such a large urban area, they have a serious adjustment problem.

Now that summer has kicked in, there are a few outdoor cheap/free things to do:

Nasher Sculpture Center is free on Thurs nights. Plus they have movies in the sculpture garden on Friday nights.

Dallas Museum of Art has it's Thurs night Jazz Under the Stars.

Shakespeare in the Park is donation only on weekdays and a paid admission on weekends...still quite reasonable.

The plaza in Victory Park has free movies on Tues nights.

Outdoor concerts at the Belmont Hotel (not exactly cheap, but setting is nice).

Also Cool Thursday at the Arboretum.

Not that cheap but if you like cover bands the Lakewood Bar and Grill has them many Fridays and Saturdays. Also you can buy a drink or two and listen to jazz at the Lakewood Theater Balcony Club or Terrilli's on Greenville. And don't forget the 4th of July Lakewood Parade (fireworks at Lakewood CC that evening) and Fair Park :: Calendar (broken link) fireworks by Grucci (timed in stereo to WRR) and Dallas Wind Symphony.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Not just the City of Dallas but many of the area cities (suburbs) also offer all kinds of free activities. Rockwall has a free splash park as well as concerts and movies. While not "free" many of the waterparks have movie nights so you can float in the water and watch a movie or hear a concert (Hawaiian Falls in Garland is just one that does this). Then there are all of the activities for the 4th of July. Star Spangled Fourth in Garland w/ free concerts, fireworks and craft vendors. This is also car show season so if your interested in checking out cars (antique, roadsters, muscle, etc) look up the calendar on hotrodhappenings.com for just one source (or Saturday night at Kellers on Northwest Highway they just come hang out).

I'm with aceplace, as much as there is to do in this city and the entire area anyone who says the ONLY things to do around here are to eat and shop needs to pull their head out of the sand. There are a TON of things to do it is just a matter of finding enough time to do all of the stuff we want to for those of us that know about it.
