Ok so I got a job lined up in Dallas area. The cool thing is that I get to work from home most of the time but not always. I have read a gazillion things about Frisco, Allen, Plano, McKinney etc etc. They sound great but the downer is the location of the place I would have to drive to is in Hutchins. That is on the south side of Dallas. How long of a commute can I truly expect from some of those places? We have found some houses in the south part in Midlothian or Waxahatchie that look really nice. Are those nice places? Do not hear much coming from the south areas. To further clarify we have a child entering middle school and obviously want a good school system and safe neighborhood. Don't care about "happening" things.

Thanks for any input.

You cannot live in Frisco or McKinney and commute to Hutchins. It’s 4pm on Sunday and Mckinney/Frisco to Hutchins drive times are currently about 45-50 minutes. Easily 75-90 minutes each way in rush hour. Tack on $10/day tolls from Frisco due to having to use the tollroad.

Honestly, the suburbs you named are all nice but the reason they get SO much play on city-data is the tidal wave of corporate relocations (Toyota, Chase, etc) that have moved thousands of families to the area over the past few years. There are PLENTY of great suburbs and schools all over the metroplex! You don’t have to suffer through a 2-3 hour daily commute to find what you’re looking for.

Depending on your budget, you might want to look into Sunnyvale, Red Oak/ Ovilla, Forney, and a little further away Rockwall, Midlothian, or southern Arlington (zoned to Martin HS & it’s feeder schools).

Thanks for the input. I would only have to commute 1-2 days per week but not sure 90+ minutes sounds fun. Also been looking at Waxahachie house as well. Between there and Midlothian is there a ton of difference? Anything else I missing in the south area even if its over by Fort Worth?

Mansfield has good schools (Mansfield HS zone). It is due south of FW and I’m not sure what I-20 traffic is like during rush hour. It could be an easy 30 Miles or not....

You could also look at Rowlett.

Not knowing your budget it’s hard to give great advice. There are some parts of Dallas that could make sense if the budget is there.

Mansfield, Midlothian, Waxahachie and Rockwell are really nice areas. Waxahachie is further out from the DFW area and the schools are mediocre to good. Midlothian IMO has better schools but not as good as Frisco and Plano. Rockwall schools are not that bad either.

Rockwall to Hutchins would be a really long commute. I agree that looking at the communities in Ellis County makes the most sense.

Check out the South Pointe development in Mansfield. Should be a 40 min to hour commute during rush hour.

Thanks for the answers. I found quite a few places in Midlothian, Waxa, and Mansfield. Any other place that should be on my radar down there? What is a better city between Midlo and Waxa? Mansfield is just a bedroom suburb I assume?

Out of those choices I would definitely choose Mansfield. The area doesn’t have too many things happening. Huge building boom though in that area. The schools are better than Waxahachie and about the same ratings as Midlothian.

Both Midlothian and Mansfield are good Choices. Would also recommend far south Grand Prairie. Worked with some guys that owned rental properties and had lived in Waxahachie, never heard anything great about it. Would've also recommended west Arlington, but I-20 can be a pain.
