West Plano is popular because it's convenient to dallas, but has great suburban amenities - close to three malls, high-end dining, great schools, and a lot of organized recreational facilities.
All of Plano is actually like this, but West Plano is the most popular because the houses are newest there.

I would actually think West plano starts at coit, I believe west of coit is part of the plano west senior high school area.

Now is the perfect time to buy! Don't let the real estate recession headlines in the national news fool you. Economic conditions have never been better in DFW! Interest rates are near historic lows!

I always enjoy going to Plano for the shopping! Have friends who live there, so when I visit, we make a day of it. Also that new mall in Frisco is like Disneyland compared to what is in Lubbock.

I have lived in Plano for 17 years, in the same house to. I guess you can say it is in Central Plano, it was developed in the late 1970s. Personally, I think West Plano starts at west of Ohio. Just about any place in Plano is good though. I am happy to live in my neighborhoos, I wouldn't change it to move to West Plano, even if I could afford it.
But like most have said, it is a "status" to be in West Plano, almost like being in Highland Park or University Park, or even Turtle Creek around Dallas.
It is near a lot of expensive shops, and the tollways. But they still have a Wal Mart in West Plano.

Willow Bend
Our neighbors call Willow Bend (our upscale West Plano neighborhood) "the center of the universe." I saw George Bush to Legacy w/n. PRESTON to Midway e/w.
While I would not go as far as my neighbors, I very strongly believe it is the best place to live in the DFW metroplex for several reasons.
1. Great schools. See my other post about that.
2. Safe. When the poorest people around you live in $300,000 houses, the cops cruise around all the time, and it's super easy to pick out people who "don't belong" in your neighborhood, you get a safe place. As a child, I would play in our neighborhood park without supervision. I still see kids playing in the neighborhood streets.
3. If you can stand the competitive atmosphere, it is kind of fun to be around people with goals, ambition, and money.
4. You have the Dallas Tollway and George Bush at your fingertips. This puts downtown Dallas or even the closest lake only 20 minutes away. Love Field Airport is 15 minutes away, and you can get to DFW airport in less than half an hour.
5. Willow Bend houses have not lost value in the housing slump, making them better investments.
6. All the rich people around give you the opportunity to see lots of different, awesome cars (I am a car fanatic).
7. Whole Foods, Central Market, and tons of great restaurants are just minutes away.
8. Houses are not stacked one on top of another.
So basically it amounts to great amenities and conveniences without exposing yourself to crappy neighborhoods near you (ex. Highland Park and University Park are really nice, but they are adjacent to some really skanky places and insane traffic).

Each to their own. Reasons #2,3, and 6 are exactly the reasons I wouldn't want to live there. That is about as close to a "bubble" as one can get. But I am glad it works for you There ARE some very beautiful neighborhoods though.

I moved to a Willow Bend neighborhood from NewYork and it is AMAZING. Sorry, call me a snob but I really don't think ANYWHERE in DFW can compare and that includes Highland and University Park. Atleast you can SEE a black or Asian person in w. Plano. It's diverse, it's educated, it's classy, and very upper class. You also know the area is LOADED because I've personally counted about 30 banks in a very small sq. mile area....that's way more than the Park Cities.
Plano has also been ranked the richest city in nation by median income, and Collin County was ranked the richest county in Texas, and 14th richest county in the nation. In terms of sheer wealth, W. Plano has a tremendous buying power. I LOVE THIS CITY.

Probably because they actually spend money on city services for their citizens, unlike Dallas.
