I live in north central Dallas now and have 2 elementary-aged kids that go to an expensive private school. We are debating either switching them to Catholic schooling (less expensive) or moving up north for a better public school district in about 1 year. I may be single soon too, so lower home costs is also a factor. Homes in Dallas are crazy expensive, and the tornado only made it worse. I would like a home around $500K in a nice area. Is that possible?

I work in Addison area off DNT. I do not want to drive more than 25-30 mins to work. I am just beginning to think about this since it is more than a year away. Thanks for your help

You could stay South of Geroge bush and still get great schools.

Far North Dallas feeds into RISD schools and is VERY close to your job. Brentfield and Bowie are 2 top ranked elementary schools and the neighbhorhood is gorgeous (Campbell Green/Prestonwood).

Going farther East from there will take you into West Richardson (75080 zip code). Same highschool feeder as bowie and brentfield. For that zip code you'll want Mohawk Elementary, Canyon Creek Elementary, or Praire creek elementary.

Here's examples of all 5 neighbhorhoods. All of them are amazing neighbhorhoods (good sized lots, mature trees, good schools, active neighbhorhood groups). Following links are to just give you an idea of location

Brentfield: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/6...26873963_zpid/

Mohawk: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1...27173876_zpid/

OP,

Mastershake laid out a great area. I looked there long and hard when I was going through the same exact situation although only one kid, not two.

I ended up in south central Plano, essentially just the other side of PGBT from there and have been extremely happy with my choice. I stayed well below $500K, downsized pretty dramatically when I got rid of all her stuff. I’d give the area a look as well. Probably PGBT north to Parker, maybe Spring Creek, Custer on the east side and Coit on the west.

I agree with the others. There is no reason to look in Frisco when you have what you want in Plano or Richardson (and I live in Frisco).

I'll chime in and throw out Prestonwood Elementary as well. That's where we go. It's more diverse than the other FND schools mentioned, which I feel is a plus, and we've been very happy there. Husband works in Addison off of the DNT and his commute is awesome. He regularly comes home for lunch. I feel like home prices have been creeping up around here lately, but you can still get a decent if not very nice house in your price range.

Also, judging by all the contractors I see out and about in my hood, I expect there to be more options soon.

Yeah my bad. I listed prestonwood as an area but forgot to list the elementary school. Schools great, neighbhorhoods pretty, and the adjacent club (Prestonwood Country Club) is a fun golf course to play

That's okay. I feel like PWE gets overlooked a lot when people think of the great schools in RISD, just because its overall rating on something like Great Schools is a 7 instead of a 9 or 10. But if you look at similar demographics, it's virtually the same. (Not to digress into a discussion about school rankings and demographics...) It's a sweet little school with a tremendous amount of neighborhood support.
