So that is comparing the number of ALL seated diners a year ago versus ALL seated diners today? That's pretty flawed isn't it, because a lot of restaurants still aren't open, and the ones that are open don't have the ability to seat more than 25% capacity.

The re-opening is at 25%, not to mention some places aren't yet opened or just have curbside. Of course it's down.

Restaurant is not a good industry to be in right now. I don't feel safe in a restaurant considering the fact that diners cannot wear masks when they are eating. Most restaurants aren't worth the money anyway.

No restaurant is worth me sacrificing my health or my life. If they go out of business, so be it. I am tired of hearing how I am supposed to support my local restaurants. I owe them NOTHING.

Most counties in Texas are still 25% open, and now restaurants are 16% back to business.

It seems that Abbott's plan is well calculated and the reopen is on the right track. The second phase (50% occupancy ) will start on May 18 if there is no surge in cases.

I think it's worth noting that if there is a 25% limit set on restaurants, but they are only 16% full, that 16% wouldn't increase much if the 25% figure jumped to 100% (ceteris paribus). It's sort of like if someone gave you a 25% portion of a really big bowl of spaghetti, and you only ate 2/3 of it. Would you have eaten more if they had given you a 50% portion? Probably not. My guess is that the 16% figure is mostly due to people not feeling comfortable in restaurants, and I don't blame them.

I do think we have some tentative good news on a national level. There were only 21,000 new cases and 1700 deaths today, and today was a Wednesday. New daily cases and deaths both seem to have heavier reporting in the latter part of the week, and while I expect to see bigger numbers tomorrow and Friday, 21k/1700 is a very good figure for a Wednesday. If you look at the overall trend, a real downward trajectory is starting to appear.

Texas did not have a good day by the numbers today (1636 cases, 38 deaths), but, at least per Worldometers, Texas appears to have been under-reporting the last few days. Maybe this was a reporting spike rather than an actual virus spike. But it is an important point that today was the highest new daily case day Worldometers has ever reported for Texas.

New York was such an outlier that you have to take it out of the country’s historical and current numbers. NY had the classic inverted V spike and decline. Most of the country - including Texas- is still going up, up, up or possibly leveling off at the top.
