When we were visiting, I didn't see an HEB grocery store, are there any in the area? What grocery stores are in Dallas?

Yes, Dallas County does have HEB grocery stores. Other grocery chains such as Tom Thumb, Kroger, Whole Foods Market, Wal-Mart SuperCenter, Super Target, Sam's Club, Costco's and some more.

oh good a Whole Foods! I do remember a nice HEB market type store in SanAntonio. It seems on every corner here there is a grocery store, a CVS or Walgreens or gas station. Now that you mention it I did see a Tom Thumb when we were there, I hadn't heard of that chain before. We have Winn Dixie, Albertsons, Publix and Sweet Bays as well as Sam's, CostCo and the Super Walmarts.

The HEB in Waxahatchie but that is the only one I know of around DFW. HEB though does have the upscale Central Markets in 3 locations. One of Lovers Lane in Dallas, One in Southlake on Southlake Blvd, another off of Coit in Plano. I don't really like shopping there unless it is for a special occasion due to it is more geared for upscale shopping. I can't get tide to go so I don't go in that often. LOL They are extremely nice and very surprised to be part of the HEB chain which I grew up with which in my eyes is a nice modest store.

Tom Thumb is a local supermarket chain that started here in DFW and a few years back somehow became part of the Randal's and Safeway chain.

We also have Market Street which I ADORE here in Mckinney and there is one in Colleyville. Very upscale like Central Market but carries a more wide variety of products at better prices.

There is also Minyards food stores, Carnival, Sack n Save, Fiesta Food Stores, and in some areas of the metroplex Brookshires as well as IGA stores in certain areas but they aren't the major supermarkets here.
The main ones are Albertsons, Kroger and Tom Thumb imo. They tend to dominate with the most stores.

Besides the 3 Central Markets that Stargazer mentioned, there's still a 4th one in Ft Worth with plans for up to 6 in the DFW metro.

HEB's regular grocery stores are only in the southern parts of the metro...Waxahachie (mentioned earlier), Ennis which is south of Dallas off I-45 about 30 miles south, and also in Cleburne which is south of Ft Worth. There are recent plans announced to build an HEB in Burleson also which will almost straddle the Johnson/Tarrant county line near the Ft Worth city limits making it the furthest to venture into the metro...and rumors of more to come....

Super Target is all you'll need.

There is one in just about every zip code.

Excellent selection for groceries and you can swing by and buy your kid a toy and a bottle of shoe polish while your out.

I haven't been to a regular grocery store for a while. No need to.

So true, SuperTarget is all I need

I visit there often. LOL!!! Even the people that work there recognize me and I know them by name now. The bakery is great, they know when I have a kid in tow and head for the cake book we are there to pick out a cake for their birthday. Same w/ the pharmacy, they know me by name and it's nice to walk up and they greet me by name. Well, maybe that one is not so great. It just means we need to many drugs....

Their clearance prices can't be beat nor can the overall quality and cleanliness of their stores.

Other stores: Kroger, Tom Thumb, Albertson's, Central Market, Brookshires, Carnival, Sack n Save, HEB, Minyard's, Market Street........... have all been mentioned.

Our Target has some frozen foods and a smaller boxed food, chips etc aisle. I've never been to the grocery store Target. I'm afraid I would spend too much there!

I do get a lot of bulk stuff at CostCo here, but I'm at a limit because there simply is not enough storage space in this house. Do any of you keep a 2nd refrigerator in the garage? A lot of families here seem to do this. I would like to take our older refrig we have now and move it with us for a garage refrigerator.

Yes, must have a 2nd fridge in the garage. Mine is an old freezer on top, fridge on bottom so the fridge shelves are larger which is great for things like a turkey that won't fit in my side by side. Usually the fridge in the garage has nothing but drinks in it: lots and lots of bottled water, a few soft drinks, lots of Gatorade, few beers, extra gallons of milk. The freezer part is used for those large things that need to be frozen, a bag of ice for get togethers till they come, popsicles in the summer, etc. We also have a mini fridge in the media room upstairs for drinks. Hubby loads a small ice chest and hauls them up there when he knows some guys are coming over to watch a game. I just bought me a wine fridge for Christmas for inside. I was hauling those upstairs to chill, pain. So now that I have a place in the kitchen to tuck this lil fridge I have a few soft drinks in there w/ the wine so when people come over I don't have to run to the garage for them. In the summer the garage is easy to run to if we are all out back. Next on the list after we clean out the garage is a stand up freezer.

I've got a fridge in the kitchen, a 22 cu ft upright freezer in the laundry room and a 9 cu ft chest freezer in the garage. I own a FoodSaver (http://www.foodsaver.com/) and use it frequently to seperate bulk meat. I tend to wait for a good sale on meat. It's not uncommon for me to buy $20 worth of bone on, skin on chicken breast, when they go on sale for $0.99 / lb. The combination of the freezers and the FoodSaver help to save us money.

As far a grocery stores go, our most frequent stop is the local Super Walmart, as it's also the closest. We also have a Tom Thumb and Kroger within a short drive.
