Do they both have excellent public schools? What makes them different?

Thank you in advance!

Erm...let's see...both are exceedingly caucasian....

HP's population is a tad bit wealthier than UP's...

UP is north of HP...

a very small portion of HP is zoned to the DISD...

UP is lower on the pecking order so if you are in it for prestige you have to be in HP. OTOH some say UP is more family-oriented while HP is more socialite/empty nester types.

I know someone who gets a kick out of someone saying they are from HP when they really are from UP -- my friend likes to correct them and see their reactions.

I know it's silly but you should be aware of the thinking in those parts.

just like one-upsmanship for country clubs or private kindergartens for their children--

Highland Park is an encorporated city surrounded by Dallas on 3 sides and University Park to the north. In 1913 Highland Park asked Dallas to be annexed and Dallas refused--once snubbed was enough. It has its own city services like police and its own mayor and city council. Highland Park surrounds the Dallas Country Club...and Highland VillageShopping center (a piece of historically significant architecture) is in Highland Park...but it has a Dallas mailing address...

University Park started as a collections of homes around SMU and has become a home rule city. Residents here must use Dallas as their mailing address as well--only their zip code announces their exclusivity...it too had requested annexation by Dallas soon after its development in 1915 and was refused and subsequently thwarted Dallas's attempt to annex it when it became in DALLAS'S interest to do so....Highland Park has the Dallas Country Club and Highland Park Village shopping center as two significant aspects--University Park because of its origin is tied to SMU
Mockingbird is one of the dividing lines

Sounds like outsider's thinking to me. I've actually lived there and never heard that.

There's virtually no difference between the two. Highland Park has no churches within it's boundaries. Highland Park's average lot is bigger than University Park's average lot. However, UP has the largest estates in the Park Cities in the Volk Estates area, south of Lover's Lane and in between Turtle Creek and Hunter's Glen. Both have the same school district.

Highland Park High School is University Park. Highland Park ISD Administration is in University Park too. Highland Park United Methodist -- is in University Park. No one in the Park Cities "corrects" each other about living in University Park vs. Highland Park. Thankfully, no one in the Park Cities I've ever known is so petty.

Folks who live in Highland Park say they live in Highland Park. Folks who live in University Park say they live in the Park Cities.

They really are very nice areas, both of them.

Did y'all catch the KRLD 1080 mid day show when Ernie and Jay were talking about parents paying kids for good grades and the Highland Park mom called in and said she paid $250 for each A, $200 for Bs, $150 Cs or some such high dollar amount on each report card all year long? She said that was the going rate in the area and she felt like she had to keep up and, anyway, the kids had to work hard to keep up in Highland Park's academic schools so she felt like the kids deserved it since it was there "jobs" to go to school.

I've heard you say this before, and I'll say this again as I just went to the HP's web site to download the official borders of the city. Highland Park United Methodist Church indeed resides within the boundaries of Highland Park.

I lived there too but it was a long time ago when UP was mostly ranch houses which have now been torn down for McMansions. So I doubt it is used as much - my friend thinks it is a good fulcrum for retorts and that's usually when she will use the UP vs HP question.
