Yeah, that's what I remember from living downtown. I'll fight our appraisal again... but it's still probably lagging actual sales prices by $150k or more so I don't have much hope for a reduction.

I'm in Mesquite and mines went up. There was a small note at the bottom that says my property value has increased by 48% since 2016. I have until May 17 to file a appeal.

Keep in mind it should be based on 2020 numbers and not 2021. The huge increase may come next year.

No change in the tax appraisal but my purchase price last year was below that value, and the homestead exemption was removed even though I moved in just before the new year. I'm protesting for those two reasons.

I haven't heard anything from the Appraisal District since I mailed in my homestead exemption application - is this normal?

Yes but look at your Appraisal and it should reflect your exemptions. Or go to the appraisal district website and check.

But yes press them on the Homestead and also send them what you paid for the house and maybe they will come down to that value.

I mailed the application in about a month ago - I wonder if they just haven't gotten around to processing it. They never sent me any follow-up mail about it except an appraisal notice that shows the exemption as removed. My friend who closed a week after I did and mailed in his application a month before me had the Homestead Exemption marked as cancelled too which is interesting.

Yeah that's the plan. The appraisal report I have also shows a value that is about what I paid for it +/- a couple k.

Denton County finally put out our appraisal values, and they are saying that ours is appraised for 7% higher than what we paid for the home in July. I don't like the idea of showing cards of what we actually paid for the house, but is this a strategy here? I also don't know the first thing in disputing and not sure if its easier to just hire someone to do this for us and I haven't really dug into yet how similar homes in our subdivision were appraised compared to ours.

Just show them what you paid. It's free and it's quick/easy. They'll lower it without question without you having to go in person. If they raise it next year, then you can look into hiring someone or come up with a plan to protest yourself.
