Hello,

Some of you helped me last time in planning for a trip through Texas. Once again, I'll be driving through the Dallas-Ft.Worth area in a few weeks. I'll be coming from New Orleans driving into Dallas from I-20. My route goes through Amarillo and on to Raton, NM.

The last time I was on this route I took I-20 from the east side of Dallas, 287/820 up through Ft. Worth, then 287 to Decatur and continued to Amarillo. It was late Sat night and the traffic was very minimal compared to the insane traffic I experienced a year ago going around Dallas on 635 on a Friday evening.

Due to the construction on 635 northeast of Dallas, I'm leary of taking 635 around Dallas up to Denton then Decatur. But even without construction that route simply means way more cars no matter what time of day.

I'll be traveling through the DFW area EITHER late on a Saturday night, or Sunday morning depending where I book a hotel.

Thoughts on routes and times of travel? Is the best route taking I-20 south of Dallas then 287 up through FW then continuing to Amarillo?

Tks.

TX 114 is a straight shot to 287. If you get yourself to I-35E going north TX 114 will split off that takes you to 287 north of Ft Worth. You just need to choose how to get from I-20 to I-35E. In any case this would avoid 635 if that's your goal.

Get the Waze app. I'm from DFW and use it to reroute around accidents and congestion.

Looks like 20 -> 175 -> 45 -> 35 is the most direct routing. I can't speak to traffic though as I've never been south of 30 and I typically fly on trips that long.

I’m very familiar with that route, adding 114 to 287 on the end. There’s only a little construction on the I45 overhead, but it doesn’t usually back up except at rush hour. Early morning or evening, you’ll be fine.

If you want to stay at the edge of DFW, there are a cluster of hotels at the I20 and US 80 split in Terrell. They are all brand new (less than a year old). Terrell has several good Mexican restaurants and a surprisingly good Thai restaurant for dinner.

Watch out, Dallas was ranked the number 1 most dangerous city to drive in this year.

And you should know as a new resident of that area yourself
