each school district's TAKS--the state's standardized test results -are made available after they have been released--which happens right at the end of the school year
this is link to the TEA region XI web site with the map of all ISDs in its area--Aubrey and Denton are in this one--Dallas/Collin area is in different region

Education Service Center Region XI | Public Schools

the individual school isd site usually post TAKS results on-line--if you can find it--some of them don't make it easy or up-front
there are three passing levels--Exemplary (#1) Recognized (#2) and Acceptable (#3)
unAcceptable is the non-passing rating
because of the nature of the scoring process, it is almost impossible for a high school to et an Exemplary rating--or even a Recognized one--unless it has either a very homogenous group of students who have great skills and usually come from fairly high-income area
or it has a group of students who are very committed to excellence--like a magnet or IB only school
it is easier for an elementary school to achieve Exemplary/Recognized because they are smaller in # than a high school--
Middle schools fall in the "middle" some of them do have exemplary or recognized scores and have groups of low-socio-economic students--

there are sites like great schools (which has lots of comments from parents)
the Dallas magazine does a feature article every so often about top ISDs in the area
and so does Texas Monthly about the state's isd--
you can google for them
plenty of comments about ISDs on this board--just do a search

in general my POV is that a smaller district like Aubrey usually cant provide the same level of the best of the ISDs in the Metroplex -- it has been growing because of more people moving to that area but it is still a small district...and it does have its share (more than its share really) of kids on free lunch--and that can be a red flag for other negatives...
schools aren't open but they should be having summer school --not what I would call an indicator of quality--but you can tour the school -- maybe see the overall condition of the bldgs--ask about the extracurricular activities--see how friendly they are

an excellent source-thank you again. We are taking our RV camping this weekend and going to discuss the potential move to TX and weigh our options. If the housing market does not improve we may be in the RV for a long time...?

Default Ambivalent between Big Spring and Denton, TX

Hello!
I am very interested in knowing more about the quality and cost of living between these two places. I am serioulsy considering TX because so far it is one of the few states that have not felt the crash on economy dramatically. I work for the federal government in Puerto Rico and seriously want to move!( I lived 11 years in NYC before coming to PR). I need feedback and recommendations of good and affordable neighborhoods around the VA clinic in Denton and both the VA hospital and the outpatient clinic in Big Spring (I'm just waiting for them to call me so I can decide). I am planning to rent for the first 6 to 12 months, and then consider buying. It's only me and my husband...
What about the job market for my husband ( he is in the Auto Mechanics/Automotive Field).

thanks!

June 29 Update: The job that was looking like mine has not yet confirmed. My wife has to accept/declined her job next week. As I write this, I am frantically looking for someone who will commit to offer me a job. Yikes! We need to leave soon to make this work to get the kids into school in time. I really do not want to move to TX withou a job and leave a job/house in Rhode Island and "hope" I can find something down there. I had another business interested in me and was supposed to call me Saturday and never did...why do people do this??

because most of the time it leaves them with bad taste in their mouths...
don't like to feel the "needy" side of the conversation
just avoid unpleasant duties...

You need to start a new thread. Use the "new thread" button at the top of the listings. This thread is old and people won't look at it for the question you asked - the original was about someone moving to live in an RV.
