Like Mark Twain purportedly wrote, "the coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco." The ideal time to visit the Bay Area is September/October, it is gloriously warm and dry during that period.

Forgotten wastelands and uninspiring yes, but I wouldn't be afraid to live in any of those areas if I was single. Punk crimes....gangs, smash and grabs, etc. I don't know enough about Fresno and Modesto to comment.

I live inland, the weather here is incredible today. Sunny and cool.

The whole coastal PacNW is odd.

The summer months are always cool in the morning and night as the fog hugs the coast. If the winds blow offshore you get the heat from the central valley but that usually last only a few days. You can easily drive from Santa Cruz where it will be 55; go to San Jose where it will be 85; drive to San Francisco where it will be 65 and then drive to Sacramento where it will be 105.

The 50s brutal. Wow, we all really do have different likes and dislikes when it comes to the weather. It sounds heavenly to me unless it was pouring down rain.

Yes, that's what I did. I choose "all crimes" and it tremendously covered most of the area. How fun is that? Just kidding.

Kinda shocking actually. It's more interesting to narrow it down by area and/or specific types of crime. Set it to just assaults for example and you will see a wide discrepency based on different parts of town.

I absolutely love the late fall and winter here in Dallas. Chilly and sharp but not painfully cold. It makes the 103 degree August days worthwhile

Well, it was 50s, straight line wind-storms and foggy. I wore a wind breaker and a sweater but it was really chilly. I grew up in Austria and spent many winter days on the ski slopes - the wind-burn/chill feeling that I got in the past two days in San Francisco was pretty much the same as after a day on the slopes. BRRRRRR. I was glad to drink hot tea in the Japanese tea garden in the Golden Gate park yesterday. And I hate tea......

On topic: While I agree that the views in CA can be absolutely breathtaking and for tourists it is no contest - I wouldn't want to _live_ in San Francisco, at least. Dallas seems much more convenient and I don't think I would want to pay $1.5 Million (not to mention I couldn't) for some half-dilapidated victorian "shack" that was built after the great fire and looks like it....... And I need a Lowes or Home Depot as well as a BIG grocery store within 3 miles of my house LOL!
