Balch Springs is just on the other side of th freeway from Mesquite. In fact I am closer to Balch Springs than I am to Town East Mall. It's really close. I am only familiar with the cities website. Do you have any particular questions.

My husband went to Mesquite and saw the SE area and agree that is a nice place. I am glad to "hear" that the traffic is not a problem. Do you know any website where I can see photos or read about Mesquite?
Might try checking out Google Earth and Google Maps on the "street view" and you can put in an address and it will take you right down the road in front of it.

I did that for my house and it showed the house about eight lots down from where mine actually is.

I have it on great authority that the Mesquite has the best volunteer based symphony orchestra in the entire metroplex.

You just told the OP to basically skip Mesquite altogether. NMHS and MHS are nowhere NEAR each other.

I keep laughing at all these people going nuts about the mean ghettos of Mesquite. My parents moved TO Mesquite to keep our family reasonably safe. Mind you, this was before the meth/cheese "epidemic" that's going on now. These people seem to want Highland Park quality at Mesquite/east Dallas prices. Okay, so it's arguable that Mesquite is less middle class and more working class than it was 10 years ago, but if you don't want to sully your delicate eyes with the vision of the working class, move out to Plano and save us all the headache.

I won't lie, though - if I could avoid the area right around the Hwy. 80 bridge, I would. And that's where I used to live as a kid. Me and my dad used to walk to that little store on the corner, M&Ms, and get their cheeseburger specials. They had the best hot fries, nice and salty. I was looking into getting an apartment at Town East Apartments, but just looking around make me say WTH! What happened to my nice, quiet, CLEAN little neighborhood?

Do you have an idea how is the traffic between Balch Spring and Mesquite. Remember that I will be living in Mesquite and working in Balch Spring.

Regards!
I live off of Clay Mathis/Lawson in SE Mesquite and it takes me 10 min max to get to Balch Springs. I usually take Pioneer to Elam Rd.

Hello, my youngest son wants to relocate to Mesquite Texas with his girlfriend and I am very leary of the move. They are young and having their first child. We are from Wisconsin might I ask as the crime rate and the choice of living in Mesquite?

For many years Mesquite was ranked in the top ten as the safest cities in Texas. Last report I read had Mesquite ranked the 88th safest city in the United States. For the most part it's a blue collar town with the two nicest areas being the South East corner of the city and the area around Galloway/Beltline and I30. Both of these areas are very diverse and have good schools. I spoke with a Mesquite police officer and he said the vast majority of the crime is car breakins in and around the Town East Mall. You get alot of of house for the money in Mesquite. I think your sons family will be happy. Like any other area of town I would advised he drive thru the area on a weekday and weekend to get a feel for the area. Renting a apartment for 6 months and exploring the areas he would interested in would also be a great idea. Let him know that the homes in Mesquite will be in the 125k-250k range. If his price point is over this he will not find a house in Mesquite FYI.

Thumbs up Mesquite, Texas & Project Renewal...

I've read several of the posts on this thread and now I think I'm ready to post a little bit of information.

I've lived in Mesquite for more than 35 years. All three of my grown children were raised and educated here. I'm also one of those "gray-collar" guys someone mentioned.

NOTE: Mesquite, Texas has been an occupied community since the mid 1800's.

Mesquite has undergone considerable changes since I first moved here in the early 1970's. Our town has a considerable inventory of smaller homes that were built right after WWII through the late 1960's. During the last 20 years or so we have seen an increase in larger square footage homes, albeit not always of the quality the community has sought. We actually have several neighborhoods of very nice homes here, both on the north end and the southern sector. Most significantly the City leadership is now aggressively working to improve the quality of residential home inventory, quality of life amenities, and overall appearance of Mesquite.

Mesquite has some of the best access to downtown Dallas in all of Dallas and Collin county; and most of the well paying jobs are either in or near downtown Big D. Most days one can commute to the downtown Dallas area within 15 or 20 minutes of leaving Mesquite. On a bad day, with inclement weather and a couple of highway accidents the trip can be made in under an hour.
And frankly speaking, I wouldn't fight the North Dallas/Plano traffic every day for all the new SUVs one could stuff in my garage.

Certainly we have experienced change in Mesquite as well as growing pains. But we are positioned to see growth of a much higher quality than we have ever experienced in the past. Our Parks department is working on a hike & bike trail that will connect all Mesquite parks and interconnect with feeder trails and trail heads that will encompass well over 100 miles of hike and bike pathways; and the first phase should be under development within the year.

Our city is actively working to help renovate three of our oldest neighborhoods, with more to follow. These are not just city hall efforts, these are projects that have been called for by the people who live here. Which brings us to one of the best things about Mesquite: our town really is OUR town. Mesquite is a mid-sized Texas city with real small town values and opportunity.

We have good schools, not without problems, but good educational facilities with decent, hard-working teachers. We have a diverse student population. And we have the challenges, difficulties, and all the opportunity that those issues bring.

If you want to live somewhere that everybody looks pretty much the same, and where challenges are kept under wraps, and traffic absolutely sucks, then maybe Mesquite really isn't for you. If on the other hand, if you want to live in one of the safest cities in the nation (as noted in a prestigious Texas magazine), and you like being served by some of the most capable, conscientious, and courteous fire fighters, police officers and paramedics that are on the job anywhere; and you want a responsive city government; and you have the patience and fortitude to persevere and be part of a genuine community effort to improve our little town, then Mesquite, Texas might just be the place you're looking for. And maybe you're also just the kind of new citizen we're looking for.

Whatever you choose, all the best to you.

Great post, evans101! The same can be said for most of the inner-ring suburbs of Dallas.
