Possible move to Rowlett, Texas. Would appreciate insights on lifestyle, crime, schools, employment, and housing. It looks close to Dallas. Thanks!

Yes, it is a suburb of Dallas. Would I recommend moving there? NO! I've lived there. Have you visited there? Good luck as just about every major road in the place is under construction. Only temp jobs though as the residents complain 24/7 about having the highest taxes in the metroplex and therefore refuse to pass any bonds to get work done that they complain they need. LOL!!! If you go to the Dallas threads and do a search for Rowlett you'll find plenty that has been posted along w/ some pictures that I posted of the Rowlett area.

For schools, Dallas County residents attend Garland ISD
Rockwall County residents attend Rockwall ISD

Yes it may be true that Rowlett may have some issues, but so does every other city around here. I have lived Rowlett/Garland going on 7 years now and I like it. I hate the construction but the land, close to highways, and to actually be able to see farm animals is nice! They are building so many things we need now:super target, starbucks, more banks, salons, apartments and malls! So yes, nice place to live if you don't mind imperfect!lol. Oh and with the pictures: (I think they get the point!)

Mall? There is no mall coming to Rowlett. Now Garland has a new mall but there are no plans at all for a mall in Rowlett. LOL!!! That is funny. You are right about the starbucks and the banks all though some of the banks are closing up as they overbuilt and saturated the area. SuperTarget opens July 29th which is a good thing. Albertsons is closing though so another big empty store to join the others along 66. If you want your nails done there are plenty of nail salons in Rowlett

Uh, I'm talking about Firewheel here. Maybe considered more Garland,Sachse area, but close enough. Yes salons are important since I am a cosmetologist. Some people actually like spending money on themselves believe it or not. Yes I am aware Albertsons is closing I think everybody knows that, however,I didn't shop there much anyway. We have the construction to thank for that.My sister will be out of the job,but most likely transfered. You could always move into those awkward apartments they're building next to Firewheel!lol.

Rowlett is a very nice area. The lake right by there is really nice as well. Rowlett is growing fast! I can remember when there wasn't much out there out on I-30 after you got past Dallas....but now there is. They just got a new Bass Pro not to long ago and there is a ton more stuff being built out there. There is no mall there but for a long time before they built Firewheel, they were talking about building a mall there, but Firewheel was built in Garland, so they decided not to. But I'm sure there will be a mall there before to long with all the growth in that whole area. There is a lot of new subdivisions and neighborhoods there that are really nice and the schools there are good. Dallas county kids go to Garland ISD and Rockwall county kids go to Rockwall ISD. The commute to Dallas is VERY SHORT....you can be there in minutes. Your basically in Dallas because that whole area has grown together and its hard to tell when you go from one city to another.

I agree, Rowlett is a great place to live and getting better. It will be so nice when the roads are finished. It may take a little while but the empty stores will be leased eventually. I would love to see a Studio Movie Grill go into one of those empty stores. I have heard in the past of the waterfront being developed down past the community center. When the turnpike is finished we will see a lot of new developement. I have been here since 93 and have been happy with the way things have been moving along in Rowlett.
Good things take time, there is no need to rush the develpment.
Rowlett is surrounded by nice suburbs as well, Garland is on the move again and that can only be good for us too. I travel around the metroplex a lot and really love it over here on the East side of Dallas county. I especially love the drive over I 30 between Rockwall and Rowlett. That used to be a nightmare before they widened the road. I was glad my kids didn't start driving till after it was finished. It certainly beats the view driving over Lewisville lake on I 35.

I just relocated my family to Rowlett from Connecticut 2 weeks ago due to work and love the area. I work in downtown Dallas and besides the rush hour commute, we are not complaining at all. We had two days to view property in Texas and ended up looking in Dallas proper, Arlington, Garland, Mesquite, Desoto and Cedar Hill. Out of 21 properties, we loved Rowlett. The neighborhoods are safe, clean and appear to hold a better class of people. Everyone is friendly and as far as Malls and shopping centers, we dont mind the drive to get to them. The main necessities like gas and grocery are within minutes. When having to shop for clothes every month or two, the drive is worth it.

It's not really close to Dallas but it's not like being marooned out in McKinney or somewhere...
