Default Young professional moving to Dallas -- Need help

I know, there are like a hundred similar threads and I read a lot of them but I just wanted to see if anyone can offer anything unique to my situation. Sorry for the clutter!

So, I'm a single young professional being relocated from Philadelphia to Dallas. I love Philadelphia and am resisting the move, but I'm afraid I may have to give in. I love the fact that Philadelphia's a "walking city" and I can go a week without having to drive my car. I love that there is a large young professional population and always lots to do close by, whether it be bars/happy hours, concerts, rec sports leagues, etc.

Anyway, I need suggestions on where to move. My budget is around $1,000+/- (preferably -) and it's just me, no pets, and not a lot of furniture. I'd like to get a nice place since I'd like to spoil myself to make up for moving when I don't really want to. I'm worried about not knowing anyone in the city so I'd like to kind of be in the middle of things with lots of stuff to do and people to meet. I was down on business about a month ago and was shown some Post properties in - I think - the uptown area. I was also told the Knox-Henderson area was good.

Anyway, I'd like some feedback and suggestions. Also, advice on things to do for someone new to the area to meet people. If you happen to be an apartment finder/realtor, feel free to message me. I'd probably be looking to move in the August to September area.

Thanks in advance!

One thing to keep in mind is the location of your potential job in Dallas. It sounds as though you are coming from one of the close in neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Rittenhouse, Center City, etc. So I think Uptown would be your best bet especially for walkability. The West Village area of Uptown would be an area to look in. You may have seen that area because Post does have some properties there.

You might also look on east side of 75 along Henderson, Fitzugh, and parts of Ross, Gaston, and Live Oak and the area by Baylor hospital. If there is a fair comparison it is kinda going through a similar gentrification process as NoLibs and Fishtown. It isn't as walkable as Uptown yet but it is getting there.

Hope this helps.

Yes, there are many threads on this already, uptown or knox-henderson is your best bet for what you are looking for.

You're not going to find a "nice" place for $1000 a month. Unfortunately that is the entry point for these areas. You might be able to get a newer 1 bedroom at the Village Apts (TheVillageapts.com | Home), but it is a couple of miles away and is not full of "professionals".

While I agree that 1000/month is the entry point for Uptown, you can still get a "nice" place for that price. It will be small, but nice.

What are the names of the newer apartment complexes on Henderson? One is just behind Vickery Park and Fireside Pies and 'the sister property' is down by Belmont. Those might be good..

You should try looking in Downtown Dallas. I currently live at Jefferson at 1001 Ross and love it! I have lived there for over a year, and would renew my lease, but my company is relocating me to Boston next month. It's located in the West End of Downtown, and walking distance to American Airlines Center (where the Mavs/Stars play), House of Blues, the W hotel (Ghostbar), and a very short drive to uptown. I have a 1 bd thats about 750 sqft that I rent for $913 a month. The apt. building is only several years old, so everything is basically brand new.

When I was moving to Dallas I also toured some Post properties and I was very disappointed. Most Post properties where built in the 90's and are in desperate need of updates. I would highly discourage renting from Post!! I have some friends who live at Villas of Katy Trail and love it!! The Villas have the best pool parties every summer, so you would have no problem meeting people there. You could probably get a 1 bd for around $1000. Good Luck!

The one behind Vickery Park is Eastbridge I think. The one down on Belmont on the south side of Henderson is called Eastside I believe.

There is also a new development at the northwest corner of Henderson and Belmont. Not sure what the name is or even if they are for sale or for rent. They look they are getting pretty close to completion, maybe later this year.

Thanks for the input. I currently live in Old City/Society Hill in Philadelphia. I tend to stay here and in Center City/Rittenhouse and don't go through Nolibs very often. I guess that gives a better idea of what I frequent.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Very helpful. I especially appreciate the specific apartment names as that helps me look it up. I'm trying to plan a quick 2 or 3 day trip down there to check places out and that definitely helps me as far as trying to maximize my time.

Also, I didn't mean to sound pompous by saying "young professional" or "nice" apartment. The "young professionals" term is thrown around a lot here and I didn't mean it to come off snobby. And, I'm also not expecting a posh penthouse or anything. I guess "nice" can be ambiguous. I just meant that I wouldn't mind spending a little bit more for a place I'm really going to be satisfied with as opposed to trying to cuts costs and settling for a place I'll end up regretting, which would add to the misery of having to move. If I get feedback that I'd be better off spending a little bit more than I'm prepared to, then that can come up during my negotiations. haha.

I have been looking for apartments in Boston for the last month and realized there are two types "young professional" or "student', so I know what you mean about using the term. I think you will really like Dallas because there are so many people in their 20's that have moved here from out-of-state. I know several realtors/apartment locators that could help you find a place when you are here. Let me know if you want their info!
