Part of the AT&T "700 Club"
First time poster, short time lurker...
My wife is pretty sure she will be one of the "700 club" to move it or lose it. We have been in San Antonio for 25 years and don't no much about Dallas.
Our one-and-only son will start Trinty Universiy in the fall, which means for the first time we don't care about school disticts. So with the price of gas and the big-city traffic we are thinking moving close to downtown. We have small pug dogs so are not ready for the condo yet. But with just the two of us (and visits from Joe-College) we only need a small house. Price wise I have no idea about Dallas but $210,000 a great house here, so maybe around $270k? If we move, I need a job too, I work in a hospital in finance and budgeting. So I have no idea where I will end up. Also, don't take offense but, we are Ombama type liberals who are worried about being surrounded by Bushies.
Where should we live?
Bill

For your price range I'd think you could find a small home in or near Lakewood or the M Streets. Both are near to downtown and have a wonderful blend of open-minded people. Plus, plenty of trees--something I can never get enough of in a city. As far as Dallas areas go, I'd also consider those areas some of the most dog-friendly.
The homes in these neighborhoods will be older, so if you're after new construction, maybe another poster will have a better selection. But there are some truly adorable bungalows around these parts. You'll pay more for less space, but if I could afford it down there, that's where I'd be for sure!

Look at Junius Heights. Homes can be had for that price here, the neighborhood is great, and it is very close to Downtown. The neighborhood is diverse plenty of Obama signs as well as McCain signs in yards.

you could find a mild fixer upper in the bluffview area for that amount. Near downtown, easy access to the tollway and lovefield is around the corner

The M streets are in zip code 75206. Junius Heights is in 75214. You might also look in Old Lake Highlands (75218). It is real close to White Rock Lake and is a very dog friendly area. Homes in there are ranch homes built in the 50s and 60s.
You might also look in Oak Cliff. Check Winnetka Heights (75208) and Hampton Hills (75211). Winnetka Heights homes are going to be similar to Junius Heights with most of the homes built between 1910 and 1935. They are for the most part primarily wood houses. Hampton Hills is mainly brick tudors built between 1925 and 1944. It is a lovely area within walking distance to a DART rail station.
In fact all of the above neighborhoods are within a short walk or short drive to a light rail station. And all but Old Lake Highlands are within a 10 minute drive to downtown. Old Lake Highlands is probably 15 to 20 minutes to downtown.
Of these neighborhoods, the M Streets will certainly be the most expensive with Hampton Hills being the most affordable.
Also, they are all close to a few different hospitals. Baylor, Methodist, and Parkland.

Hope this helps.

I might suggest getting an apartment in The Villages ( TheVillageapts.com | Home) for a few months so you can check all the areas out first hand for a few months to find where your favorite places are. They do 3- and 6- month leases, which is an awesome option, plus it's quite close to Central Market, the DART station and my favorite Thai in Dallas - Royal Thai. It's also a short bike ride to White Rock Lake (or jog if your a longer distance runner - it's 1 to 1.5 miles to the lake).

Between White Rock Lake Dog Park and HOME: The Deep Ellum Dog Park @ Downtown Dallas are many wonderful areas which will fit the bill. Check out 75214, 75206 and the Hollywood Heights section of 75223. Also search here for threads on East Dallas, Lakewood, M-Streets and Lower Greenville Ave., Vickery Place, Knox-Henderson, Junius Heights (Macbeth and I both live there and love it - Bungalow Heaven) etc. Besides being five minutes from the huge Baylor University Medical Center Baylor Health Care System: Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas Awards and Accreditations (broken link) most other hospitals are located in Central Dallas - see above and add Presbyterian, Medical City..another complex of hospitals is on Stemmons I-35 near downtown - Parkland, Zale-Lipshy, Southwestern, Children's, St. Paul's, Scottish Rite..
Welcome to Big D!
