Ridiculous! How does HP keep minorities from buying homes in HP? They don't. You've gone off on this on dallasmetropolis.com and everyone else said you were completely wrong. Just stop. It was old a long time ago and moving it to a different website doesn't change anything

Dictionary.com

thug Audio Help /θʌg/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[thuhg] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation,
–noun 1. a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer.
2. (sometimes initial capital letter) one of a former group of professional robbers and murderers in India who strangled their victims.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Origin: 1800–10; < Hindi thag lit., rogue, cheat]

People dressed up to be that definition. You can read whatever you want into a story but I guarantee if you asked students what they were going to dress up as the day before, they would all say a gangsta or a thug (something not at all synonomous with any racial term).

I will repeat that I am not in favor of Thug Day, which for whoever doesn't know was an "underground" Senior Dress up day during homecoming week that the school DOES NOT sponsor, but The intentions were not racist at all. Yes it is true that minorities are disproportionately going to be in that lifestyle but to say or think that makes the two synonomous is undeniably racist.

Let's look at the statement from a student in the article
"Katie said the theme days had been a subject of conversation among students recently, and that she'd heard that some teachers were offended. She said the student who showed up with a leaf blower crossed a line.

'I thought it was funny, but that's probably offensive,' she said."

In other words it was racist, but it sure was funny.

And as far as my not being an expert. I'm not, but I am someone who had a job that included going in and out of these houses. I can tell you how often they were relieved I was white, and said so, and how often they had requested a white photographer. I had that happen only once anywhere else.

Again is this the majority of Highland Park, no, but it was a lot higher percentage, I mean like ten times higher, than anyplace else.

Markypants2023

I can feel the temperature rising form all of us. Let me say that I fully believe you mean what you say, and tell a story. One of the three places I lived when I was young was a small town in Northern Oklahoma. Shortly after moving here I met someone who pointed out what a racist town it was. I was horrified and argued that it wasn't. I wasn't racist, nor was my family, nor were any of my friends (and of course they weren't would you be friends with a racist... neither would I). Upon going back to visit family a year or so later I was shocked. I wasn't with my group of friends I saw the way black and native American people were treated at the mall, the movie theatre, the wal mart. I heard the racist jokes. I realized that the place was indeed appallingly racist. I pointed this out to my parents who said something along the lines of "god yes, "I've never lived anyplace else that racist" These were people who between them lived in ten states and three countries. Sometimes the outsiders eye is sharper, because we aren't surrounded by only the people in that town that we choose to be we have to deal with a random sampling, not a selected one.

For summers I still live with my parents in HP. I still have yet to see any of it firsthand.

As for what the girl said...c'mon. Some of the most popular comedians right now get their laughs through racist humor. David Chappelle gets ALL his laughs (well when he was making the show) through jokes that people would say that same exact quote to except they wouldn't say "probably." I'll give you that HP/UP is racist. I won't give you that they are any more racist than Lakewood, Plano, Richardson, Atlanta, LA, Chicago, NYC, etc.

Then your explanation for the fact it was the only place we were regularly told to send only a white employee would be?

You cannot deny that for more than 35 years HPISD has been a magnet for white flight. Of course not everyone from HP is racist. But there is a large congregation.

I know that I am an intentionally over-the-top blow-hard about Lakewood (isn't that one of my charms?). It is baffling that those from HP can't see any of their own 'foibles' - but then neither could Narcissus.

I would that my experience has been very different. Ive heard racist comments more outside of HP than I have in.

There are certainly going to be some racist people but I wouldn't say the area is racist.

As for HP being a magnet for white flight....isn't that the reason suburbs exist today? That wouldn't apply to lakewood but it would Plano, Frisco, etc.

Well white flight was largely about schools lets look at the districts

Plano 55% white
Frisco 64% white
Highland Park 94% white

Seems like white flight was more successful to Highland Park.

The problem is we keep talking about areas being racist. Areas aren't people are, and there seems to be a higher percentage of people who are in Highland Park. Now that doesn't make me assume someone from Highland park is racist, but I believe, as I suspect do most, that one is more likely to encounter Racism in Highland Park than Dallas. Now I don't mean racial violence or anything of that nature, but I bet if we put a black man and a white man in Highland park, and had both ask for help because of a broken down car, the white guy would get help MUCH faster. That is the kind of racism I am referring too.
